Out of the Dark (Movie Review)

Supernatural Horror films seem to be a hot ticket on the modern scene. One of the newest is a film titled Out of the Dark directed by Lluis Quilez (Avatar (short) 2005, Yanindara 2009), who is also credited for special effects. The films visual effects were conducted by Eloi Bartolome (Eva 2011, Animals 2012), with production of Belen Atienza (Pan’s Labyrinth 2006, The Orphanage 2007), and a screenplay written by Javier Gullon (Girls Never Call 2005, Enemy 2013) along with the brother team of David and Alex Pastor (Carriers 2009, The Last Days 2013).  Filmed in late April 2013 in Bogota, Columbia, Out of the Dark made its debut at Germany’s Fantasy Filmfest on August 27th, 2014, and recently made its limited US debut on February 27th, 2015.

Opening in Santa Clara, Columbia, in 1992, Dr. Contreras Sr. is frantically packing after a call telling him to burn files. As he is rushing to try and burn them, the doorbell rings, but by the time he reaches the door no one is present. With a shadow on the upper balcony, he goes back in the house where there are sounds of breaking glass and falling objects to which he investigates and ends up with an untimely death.

Picking up twenty years later, Sara (Julia Stiles: 10 Things I Hate About You 1999Save the Last Dance 2001), her husband Paul (Scott Speedman: Underworld 2003, The Strangers 2003), and their daughter Hanna (Pixie Davies: Nativity 2: Danger in the Manger! 2012, The White Queen 2013) are moving from the UK to Columbia so Sara can help her father Jordan (Stephen Rae: V for Vendetta 2005, Underworld: Awakening 2012) with the family paper mill.  Jordan takes Sara and her family to their new home. In the local market, Hanna has her toy horse snatched by a girl.  Hanna follows her and, when she gets close enough, she sees the girl’s face is wrapped in gauze. Meanwhile, to help out the family, Jordan hires Catalina (Vanesa Tamayo: Los Protegideos 2008, Pobres Rico 2012), a maid/nanny. Paul and Sara attend the festivities for the annual celebration Ninos Santos, translated into English as The Holy Children, or Children Saint. Paul and Sara return home to a spooked Catalina and hear Hanna scream. After searching everywhere, they find Hanna in the dumbwaiter, she is unconscious with a high fever and a strange rash. They take Hanna to a near-by clinic, after tests, they can not determine what ails her.

As time passes, Hanna’s condition worsens, and is abducted by a group of children all wrapped in gauze. Paul and Sara contact the police who are no help. Paul leaves to find Catalina to help figure who took Hanna. Sara and her father run into Paul in the old mill. They find Hanna wrapped in the net surrounded by the children’s ghost. Will they get to Hanna in time?

Out of the Dark is an exciting paranormal thriller with all the plot twists and turns keeping viewers on the edge of their seat in anticipation. Graced with an excellent cast, solid story-line, and great atmosphere, it is a film well-worth checking out. CrypticRock give Out of the Dark 3 out of 5 stars.
