The Sound of Animals Fighting Sellout Opening Night 3-20-14 at The Trocadero Theater Philadelphia, PA

The mythical entities, referred to as The Sound of Animals Fighting, have not said a word or done anything as far new music or live performances since early 2009. Many thought the band would never see the stage again and the rock supergroup had called it quits. All hope was lost until November 12, 2013, that was the day the band’s Facebook page would suddenly display a message announcing a seven show tour throughout the month of March. The tour dates consisted of two in Philadelphia, PA, New York City, Boston, MA, Los Angeles, CA, Tempe, AZ, and finally ending the run in Pomona, CA. Like wildfire the news spread and the buzz was everywhere among the band’s followers.

Few bands these days can sellout shows, even fewer can take a hiatus for four years and come back like The Sound of Animals Fighting did and completely sellout four of their seven shows with the remaining three coming close. It is safe to say the world was ready for another mythical journey. On the opening night of the tour on Thursday March 20th The Sound of Animals Fighting took the stage at the historical Trocadero Theater right outside of Chinatown in Philadelphia.  Upon entering the theater the crowd was charged and ready.

Unwed Sailors kicked off the night with enchanting vocal-free melodies. Their music, which can be described as rock with layered synths and playful drum dynamics, was very intriguing and kept everyone’s attention. The songs put out an eerie vibe as the crowd traveled through their forty-five minute set, which really contributed to setting the tone for the nights proceedings. The only words spoken throughout the set were, “Thank you, we are Unwed Sailor” respectfully.  Like that the stagehands went to work setting up for the main attraction.

The lights dimmed and the roar of fans was deafening as on to the stage came figures in yellow bodysuits gripping one another as a melody was sung. Upon completion the figures dispersed and, like thunder, The Sound of Animals Fighting arrived.  The band’s cast for the evening included Anthony Green (Circa Survive), Matt Embree and Chris Tsagakis (Rx Bandits) and Rich Balling (formerly of Rx Bandits).

The stage was on fire and the crowd was feeding it. Two songs through the set the energy peaked in the room with the steel barricade buckling. Security had to push and hold the barricade together for the remainder of the set. Playing for well over an hour and never stopping the energy it’s safe to say The Sound of Animals Fighting haven’t skipped a beat and are still the myth-like creatures that fans envision them. You need to go see this series of concerts before this brief tour’s conclusion. Who knows when this chance will arrive again, if ever.
