Rockstar Energy Drink Uproar Festival was established in 2010. Over the past years Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Stone Sour, Halestorm, Three Days Grace, Seether, Bullet For My Valentine, Escape The Fate, Sevendust, Shinedown, Godsmack, Staind, In This Moment, among many others have graced the stage. It has established itself as a primary late summer hard rock and metal festival. In 2013 the festival decided to change directions with booking Alice In Chains, Jane’s Addiction, Coheed And Cambria, and Circa Survive to headline the main stage.
Taking a more alternative rock approach to the line-up with many up and coming acts on the side stages including Walking Papers, Danko Jones, Middle Class Rut, New Politics, The Chuck Shaffer Picture Show, The Dead Daisies, Beware Of Darkness, and Charming Liars. On August 18th Uproar Festival came through to Nikon at Jones Beach Theater. Although the weather was mild and rain threatened the entire day rock fans gathered for what would be a excellent day of music. Cryptic Rock provided full comprehensive literal and visual coverage of Uproar Festival.
Charming Liars- Hailing from the UK but now based out of Los Angeles, California Charming Liars consist of Charlie Cosser (Vocals), Karnig Manoukian (Guitar) & Mike Kruger (Bass). Hitting the stage around 2:50 PM the brits started the day off strong. With a melodic rock sound and passionate vocals by Cosser the band caught the attention of many a new fan as they arrived the festival. Catchy and intelligent lyrics highlight this talented young band. Their debut EP is out now.

Danko Jones- From Toronto Canada Danko Jones are no new comers to the rock scene. Having been established since 1996 and have released 6 full length albums the guys know what they are doing. Hitting the stage around 3:10 PM the band was ready to rock. Danko Jones himself is a very animated character and is engaging to the crowd in between songs. Taking influence from garage rock, punk rock, and everything in between Danko Jones provided a great catchy rock n roll sound. Many have heard the name Danko Jones but now a large audience get to see what these guys have to offer and that is some kick ass rock.

The Chuck Shaffer Picture Show- From Richmond Virginia The Chuck Shaffer Picture Show are an independent rock band looking to make some noise. Consisting of Ryan Johnson – Lead Vocals, Guitar, David Stiefel – Bass, and Adam Gilbert – Drums. In 2012 the band was the battle of the bands winner and played at the Uproar Festival in Bristow, Va. In 2013 they find themselves with a slot on the Coldcock Herbal Whiskey Stage at Uproar Festival. The 3 piece band hit the stage around 3:35 PM and made the most of their time. With catchy melodic riffs, throbbing bass lines and emotional vocals they turned the heads of many in attendance. With an energy driven set The Chuck Shaffer Picture Show have a bright future.

New Politics- All the way from Copenhagen, Denmark New Politics are a unique alternative rock band. After the success of their debut album New Politics (2010) they followed up with A Bad Girl In Harlem in May of 2013. Building a strong fan base one by one New Politics hit the stage at 3:55 PM. With high energy, catchy upbeat music and hip hop influence, the band drew a large crowd for their performance. Lead singer David Boyd showed off his wide array of dance moves which within themselves are a wonderful spectacle. Break dancing, standing on his head and in between it all singing his ass off. Boyd and company are a unique fun rock band which are picking up momentum each time they perform.

Beware Of Darkness- From Los Angeles California Beware Of Darkness are a gritty classic rock influenced band. Many may have heard their dirty rock single “Howl” getting airplay on SiriusXM Octane. If you like classic rock like Led Zeppelin and AC/DC you will love this band. They hit the stage at around 4:20 PM. Their soulful brand of rock n roll had all in attendance moving. With energy and a classic rock n roll vibe there is only 1 word to describe these guys and that is cool. Their debut album Orthodox is out now!

Middle Class Rut- Coming from Sacramento California Middle Class Rut are making a name for themselves. Having shared the stage with Social Distortion, Alice In Chains, 30 Seconds To Mars, Chevelle and many more these guys are a serious band. Consisting of only 2 members in Zack Lopez – vocals, guitar and Sean Stockham – vocals, drums. With a full band they hit the stage around 4:45 PM. Many gathered at the stage to check them out and see what they had to offer. With an indie rock sound and passionate stage performance many walked away at the end of their set impressed by Middle Class Rut. Their new album Pick Up Your Head is out now.

The Dead Daisies- A rock n roll supergroup with Jon Stevens (Noisework, INXS) on vocals, David Lowery on rhythm guitar, Richard Fortus (Guns N Roses, Love Spit Love) on lead guitar, Frank Ferrer (Guns N Roses, Love Spit Love) on drums, Marco Mendoza (Thin Lizzy, Whitesnake) on bass, and Dizzy Reed (Guns N Roses) on keyboard. That line-up speaks for itself. Hitting the stage around 5:10 PM the band was ready to go. Accomplished Australian vocalist Jon Stevens came onto stage in a wheel chair due to an accident prior to the beginning of Uproar Festival. Being a true rock n roll trooper the man performed with a broken leg and thumb. With a powerful soulful rock n roll voice The Dead Daisies lit up the stage. With a tight solid performance the band performed a set of blues rock n roll off their debut album The Dead Daisies. Their single “Lock N’ Load” highlighted their excellent set.

Walking Papers- From Seattle Washington Walking Papers headlined the Zippo Encore Festival Stage. Featuring Jeff Angell (Missionary Position) lead vocals/ guitar, Duff McKagan (Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver) bass, Benjamin Anderson (Missionary Position) keyboards, and Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Mad Season) drums. A set of well accomplished musicians in their own right Walking Papers combine hard rock and blues for a killer sound. Hitting the stage at 5:40 PM the band proved to be the real deal. A passionate vocal performance by Jeff Angell was complimented by the overall tight performance of the entire band. With a full set of tracks from their debut album Walking Papers (2012) all in attendance enjoyed their performance. This is rock n roll in it’s purest form.

Circa Survive- Opening the main stage Circa Survive from Philadelphia PA started things off right. Hitting the stage at 6:20 PM Anthony Green and company did not disappoint. Now almost a decade into their career with four full length records their popularity has grown steadily over the years. With their dynamic full atmospheric sound the amphitheater echoed with melody. Providing fans with an adrenaline driven performance ranging from their early material off Juturna (2005) to their latest album Violent Waves (2012). The band managed to keep a good balance in an abbreviated 7 song set. Green’s vocal performance soared and with the breeze coming off the beach in the backdrop the scene was perfect.

Coheed And Cambria- A New York native Coheed And Cambria have been wowing audiences for over a decade now. Combining elements of progressive rock, punk rock, pop, metal and post-hardcore the band has built a massive fan base over the years. The band hit the stage around 7:15 PM. Performing a get set of all their concept driven rock songs, highlights were “Key Entity Extraction V: Sentry the Defiant” and “Key Entity Extraction III: Vic the Butcher”. Their new material is some of the best most powerful to date and translates excellently live. The crowd was completely engaged in this excellent performance.

Jane’s Addiction- Having achieved major success during the 1990’s Jane’s Addiction were direct support on Uproar Festival. With the charismatic Perry Farrel on vocals, Dave Navarro on guitar, Stephen Perkins on drums, and Chris Chaney on bass. The band hit the stage at 8:20 PM as the night was fully set in. With an elaborate stage setup of women swinging above the stage making for a circus like atmosphere. Perry Farrel put on an excellent performance vocally and provided a strong presence. Opening their set with a newer track “Underground” off The Great Escape Artist (2011) record. The song set the mood for a excellent set highlighted by “Mountain Song”, “Then She Did”, “Ocean Size”, “Jane Says” and many more. A treat for fans was the unveiling of a new track entitled “Another Soulmate”. Jane’s Addiction rocked hard and definitely pleased a packed amphitheater of fans.
Alice In Chains- Closing out the evening were one of the 1990’s most memorable bands Alice In Chains. After the tragic passing of Layne Staley in 2002 many thought the book had closed for Alice In Chains. Jerry Cantrell and company regrouped after a period of mourning and found themselves a new vocalist in William DuVall. Now 2 records deep post Layne Staley the band released some of their strongest material in years in The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here (2013). A near capacity crowd were ready as Alice In Chains hit the stage at 9:45 PM. Massive screens above and behind the band highlighted their stage set up. Opening things up with “Them Bones” the mood was just right for a list of classic Alice In Chains tracks to follow. Jerry Cantrell is without one of the best song writers around and the crowd were attentive to his performance on guitar. The new Alice In Chains tracks like “Hollow”, “Check My Brain”, and “Stone” mixed in nicely with songs from Facelift (1990), Dirt (1992), and Jar Of Files (1993). All in attendance shouted along with the timeless track “Man In A Box”. When the rhythm of “Nutshell” traveled through the evening air one couldn’t help but be reminded of the late Layne Staley. William DuVall put on an excellent performance and his voice holds it’s own without comparing to Staley but does Staley proud at the same time. It’s an experience to see this band perform live and the perfect end to the evening of rock n roll.
Uproar Festival 2013 dared to be different and the result was a well balanced day of rock n roll. Show casing new bands, older bands, and everything in between. All in attendance left Jones Beach with a memorable experience of their favorite bands and a plethora of new music to learn more about.
