Born Amy Louise Billings and performing under the name Amy Cushway between 2008 and 2012, the Australian Indie Pop singer known as Amy Shark is an eight-time ARIA award winner. Releasing several chart-topping songs, including 2016’s “Adore,” 2018’s “I Said Hi,” and 2019’s “Everybody Rise,” Amy Shark seems to have a way to connect with others on a deeper level. Doing so with her personal lyrics and powerful music, these attributes all come to the surface once more with her latest album, Sunday Sadness.
From being a judge on the 2023 reboot of Australian Idol to writing chart toppers and creating masterpieces with talents such as Dann Hume (Evermore), Kid Harpoon, and Tom DeLonge (Blink-182), Shark is climbing the ladder on her way to becoming one of Australia’s most successful artists. However, what does this all mean for her album Sunday Sadness?
This means that through her vast experience, she has created some of the most stunning music to date. Released on August 9, 2024, through Wonderlick / RCA Records, the title is interesting because Shark confesses Sundays are when she does most of her thinking. A time where she is allowed free space to ponder life; while Sunday Sadness marks her third overall studio album, it is also the third consecutive, which has hit number one on the Australian Charts. She released four singles prior to the album itself (“Beautiful Eyes,” “Loving Me Lover,” “Two Friends,” and “My Only Friend”), each showing a different side to her sound.
Eleven songs in total, it all begins with “Slide Down The Wall,” which features a beautiful guitar piece and light keys, setting the mood for Shark’s heavy lyrics. Harmonizing is one of her stronger suits in her work, and that is ever so certain here. This is while songs like “Loving Me Lover” have a fun or rather upbeat vibe to them. Kicking off with an acoustic guitar and synths, it leads into compelling lyrical lines like –
“All the warm lights hang over the pool.”
Keeping the melody strong with Shark’s voice, “Loving Me Lover,” gives this album something extra special. Meanwhile, “I’m Sorry” has an incredibly relatable sensation of longing. It is more acoustic-based, with a steady beat and a very personal song. Then, “My Only Friend” finds Blink-182’s Tom DeLonge pairing his voice with Shark’s beautiful, harmonious voice. A duo that creates something unique, friendships and relationships tend to get a bit tangled at times…and this song has a heavy play on this scenario.
Overall, Sunday Sadness takes a deeper dive into one’s yearning for more than a friendship. Complete with intensely thoughtful lyrics that most can connect with and melodies that match greatly with Shark’s singing. Making it a must-listen for her fans and those looking for very human singer-songwriting compositions, Cryptic Rock gives Sunday Sadness 5 out of 5 stars.
