Within the realm of Heavy Metal, America can proudly take credit for pioneering the Death Metal sub-genre. With bands such as Possessed and Death spreading their seeds all over the world, anger release therapy had found a new outlet. Further developing this genre into a more brutal, gore-filled, Slasher/Horror movie vibe, there was also Cannibal Corpse, among others. Releasing their sixteenth studio album Chaos Horrific on September 22, 2023 through Metal Blade Records, Cannibal Corpse prove to still be one of the heaviest bands around.
Coming two years after 2021’s Violence Unimagined, Chaos Horrific’s lineup has sustained itself, and still stars one of the kindest souls alive, Vocalist George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher. He has one of the most brutal hair whipping and guttural vocal stylings of them all, yet his spare time is spent with his family playing carnival games to win stuffed animals; that he then donates to children in need. The rest of the lineup consists of Erik Rutan (formerly of Morbid Angel, currently of Hate Eternal) and Rob Barrett (formerly of Malevolent Creation) on guitars, plus original members Alex Webster on bass along with Paul Mazurkiewicz on drums.
Feeling like a continuation of its predecessor, Chaos Horrific still has some new extreme moments to endure. Ten songs in total, it covers some monstrous hits such as “Blood Blind,” “Vengeful Invasion,” “Fracture and Refracture,” and “Pitchfork Impalement.” This also includes the title-track, which overall, has a bit more Technical Death vibes happening, as opposed to the more classic and brutal vibes of the past.
Looking at the entire picture, Cannibal Corpse’s career has now spanned about thirty-five years, and they are still as creative as they can be with their indestructible brutal titles and lyrics. However, the truth of the matter is no matter what exciting creations they come up with, it is fairly impossible they will ever get around surpassing the popular classic such as “I Cum Blood,” “Hammer Smashed Face,” and “Fucked With A Knife.” This is commonly the case with most Heavy Metal bands that have had an extensive career that started with some incredible brilliance. Although, this is not to discredit new albums such Chaos Horrific… because they are still very important to the band’s relevance and future.
To put it all in perspective, Chaos Horrific is well-executed and is an album that will speak to younger and older fans alike. Featuring artwork from none other than long term creative partner Vince Lock, it depicts a special sort of zombie apocalypse that ties in the living with the undead. Still going strong, the band continues to test the limits on what they can get away with… without someone getting offended.
Now with this new material in-hand they plan to hit the road in April of 2024 on the Metal Crushes All Tour with Amon Amarth, Obituary, and Frozen Soul. Something you will want to catch, Cannibal Corpse is as passion filled as ever, and for that Cryptic Rock gives Chaos Horrific 4.5 out of 5 stars.
