Since forming in 2008, Los Angeles-based band Fitz and the Tantrums have done an exceptional job of standing out. Falling under the umbrella of Pop, the band’s retro approach to their music has often shined very bright. Soulful, danceable, and lively, they have successfully taken an old school approach and morphed into something modern, yet fresh enough that a broad audience has latched on.
Releasing 5 albums thus far, from 2010’s Pickin’ Up the Pieces to 2022’s Let Yourself Free, Fitz and the Tantrums have continued to keep things interesting. A testament to their chemistry as a collective group – Michael Fitzpatrick (lead vocals, keyboards), Noelle Scaggs (co-lead vocals, percussion), James King (saxophones, flute, harmonica, keyboards, percussion, guitar) Joseph Karnes (bass), and Jeremy Ruzumna (keyboards) – now in 2023, after releasing a deluxe edition of Let Yourself Free (with additional songs) in June, they bring on some holiday spirit with their latest EP Perfect Holiday.
Not their first exploration into the world of Holiday music, some may recall their 2010 tune “Santa Stole My Lady.” If not, it is worth checking out. That said, Perfect Holiday, released on November 10th through Elektra Entertainment, comes at you with 5 brand new all original Holiday songs. Rather cool, because it would be less risky to cover some Holiday favorites, but what Perfect Holiday gifts you is something new and cheerful.
Very upbeat and catchy, the songs that make up Perfect Holiday are something that will appeal to all ages. Complete with positive messaging about love, showing appreciation, and remembering how special life is, you cannot help but walk away from this EP feeling more hopeful. That said, these emotions are universal from start to finish, but standouts include the single “Give Love This Year,” “Some Kind of Christmas,” and the irresistible “Caroling.”
Overall Perfect Holiday is very fitting for Fitz and the Tantrums and shows they truly do cherish the season. It is also important to note they will be performing the lead single “Give Love This Year” on The Talk this December 11th; so, tune in to CBS at 2:00pm ET/1:00pm PT to catch the performance. Well worth checking out and reminding us how great the holiday season can be if we are in the right frame of mind, Cryptic Rock gives Perfect Holiday 4 out of 5 stars.
