In the modern world, people have all heard stories about a dating app serial killer. Many of these stories, whether true or fictional, end with the killer being a man. However, what happens when a female killer is drawn to the dating app world?
With a creative mindset, Writer David Bermudez (The Unforgivable Podcast 2021, Strong Hawk: My Sister’s Keeper 2022) brings audiences an interesting set of characters in the new film Ghosted. Also produced and starred in by Bermudez, the Lokesh Babu Akula-directed Ghosted arrived digitally on September 22, 2024, through Goofbird Entertainment, and is currently available for streaming through Tubi. With this all in mind, the characters include Bermudez as Jaylen, Myles Brown (Illumeably 2021-2022, Look Into the Fire 2022) as Shawn, Nisha Steiger (Hollywood Grit 2024) as Karina, Saisha Teagues (A Good Thing 2020, Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story 2022) as Lita, Gabrielle Wright (Andi Mack 2019, Before I Wilt 2023) as Lauren, and Lauren Rascoe (Reckless Behavior 2021) as Candace.
As mentioned, a focal point of the film, Ghosted is about an American Playboy and his wingman who are abducted after a blind date from a dating app gone wrong. Considered a Horror Comedy, while Ghosted has its laughable moments, the thrills are a bit less…thrilling. A bit more cheesy, this does not at all mean it is bad. Another factor that helps Ghosted is the camera work. Key in the film, from the angles to the cuts, it flows perfectly. This is while the lighting is solid, and the colors match great in every scene.
There is also the music from Thomas Andrew Gallegos which is quite good, even though it can be a bit overpowering in particular scenes. Furthermore, the acting is not too bad, plus Jaylen’s and Shawn’s characters are connected decently. However, it is the comedic relief that connects everything. Considering this aspect, Smooches (Sharrieff Coleman: Walk a Mile in My Shoes 2023, Unvexed 2024), is just the character needed in Ghosted. The positives aside, some things that could have made Ghosted a bit better, would have been consistency. For example, some of the sound equipment attached to the actors at times can be seen, and this tends to throw the audience off.
So, while Ghosted might be a bit cheesy and stereotypical, it does have its moments. With a production team that knows what they are doing and a cast that gets the gist of things, it is surprisingly entertaining, and that is why Cryptic Rock gives Ghosted 3 out of 5 stars.
