HEAVYS Headphones (Review)

Anyone who is a music fan knows the most delightful way to indulge truly comes down to the quality of the sound. Something that is all but lost in the modern world, where quality is sacrificed for the sake of convenient, compressed streaming services and smaller/lesser quality speakers, how many among us truly know the way the music is really supposed to sound? Well, that is a hard question to answer, but the one positive aspect of the modern audio world is headphones.

Seemingly the way most listen to their music nowadays, streaming it through their smartphone, obviously headphones are not anything new under the sun. A technology that dates back over 130 years, there clearly have been advancements over time leading to the music consumer taking to this singular audio experience. Looking back, you can turn to the 1970s as when many found headphones a convenient, enjoyable way to listen to their music without disturbing others around them. However, it would be during the 1980s that we saw the headphone become more portable and widely used outside the home with the advent of portable cassette players (predominantly popularized by the Sony Walkman). Then moving forward, the late 1990s gave birth to the commercialization of wireless headphones.

Since then, the headphone market has all exploded with smartphones interjected into our everyday lives. With this a list of big players have capitalized on this market with their products; such as Beats by Dre, Bose, Sony, among others. Each offering some pretty impressive sound, in truth, none are really tailored for Heavy Metal. Looking at this further, Heavy Metal, while not everyone’s cup of tea, certainly delivers a wide range of tones. There are powerful drums and bass, high soaring vocalists or gruff, throaty growls, blistering guitars, plus so much more. Truly some of the most dynamic music around in terms of the variations and musicality, it can also be quite complex and difficult to follow without proper separation.

Sadly, not accepted in most places as a mainstream art form, Heavy Metal’s core listenership has still remained strong through the decades. A community like no other, now a headphone has been designed with Metal fans in mind, called Heavys. To cut the story short, Heavys Chief Technology Officer is Mr. Axel Grell. Grell, spending 27 long years designing headphone technology for Germany’s Sennheiser, is responsible for some extremely high-quality sets… so he knows a thing or two about it all. This in mind, Grell is also a pretty passionate Metal fan who is well aware of the frustrations of finding a pair of headphones that deliver the true experience of the music. Set on solving this problem, he and a dedicated group began the project to develop Heavys. Now the question is – how does the final product sound?

Well, let us just say these wireless, Bluetooth headphones are of the highest quality in terms of structural integrity and design. Also built for comfort, they may not be extremely small, but certainly weigh light on your head and are easy on your ears. With this, the ease of use is top notch with simple controls on the headphones. Something you can set up in a matter of minutes, you are bound to immediately shuffle through a list of your favorite Hard Rock and Heavy Metal bands just to sample each. Which leads to the most important aspect, the listening experience. In all honesty it is nothing less than breathtaking; because you are hit with clarity and detail no matter what you select. With this you can hear the intricate nature of the guitar riffs, feel the drive of the drums and bass, but also hear the vocals like never before.

Rather exceptional and exciting, depending on your tastes, you will find that Heavys excels in various sub-genres. Whether it be the overwhelming wall of Black Metal (Dissection, Cradle of Filth, Dark Funeral), the intensity of Melodic Death Metal (At the Gates, Carcass, Insomnium), or the color of straight up traditional Heavy Metal (Iron Maiden, Grim Reaper, Judas Priest), you are going to hear detail like you never heard before on. Hard to believe, when you more than likely have been listening to these albums for years, there is still something to be discovered with Heavys! Beyond this, even if you listen to less extreme forms of heavy music, there is something to behold as well; for example, acts like Thousand Foot Krutch, Creed, and Alice in Chains also sound fantastic.

In all, Heavys is the ultimate set of headphones for Rock and Metal fans. Offering plenty – including 50 hours of battery life, 8 pro drivers, active noise cancellation, 5 built-in microphones (so, you can make a call if you want), and a really solid protective traveling case – there is still more! Moreover, you can actually customize the outer shells of headphones to your personal tastes. Perhaps the attribute that will immediately catch your eye before even digging into what Heavys are all about, currently you can select from a slew of headphone shells ranging from The Amity Affliction to Exodus and Testament, but also everything from DevilDriver to Paradise Lost! No doubt something very unique, if you so shall choose, you can pick up several different shells and change them out to wear out with pride like your wardrobe of band t-shirts.

So, if you are curious about investing in Heavys, the answer is absolutely consider it, they are worth the price. As stated, exceptionally crafted, they should offer you years of music joy; whether it be at home with your high-quality stereo system or on the go somewhere. That is why Cryptic Rock highly recommends these carefully designed headphones, giving Heavys 5 out of 5 stars.
