Hilary Duff – luck… or something (Album Review)

Hilary Duff 2026

With a promising future ahead, Hilary Duff began her career in the ’90s with tv commercials, before landing her first role as Wendy in 1998’s Casper Meets Wendy. However, she is best known for her role as Lizzie in Lizzie McGuire. The moment Duff became a sensation among young girls worldwide who loved Lizzie McGuire, acting was just one of her talents, because in 2002, she launched her music career with the debut album Metamorphosis.

Topping the Billboard 200 charts in the USA, Metamorphosis went on to become 4x platinum certified by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Since that time, Duff has sold an estimated fifteen million records worldwide over the course of five more albums, and Billboard ranked her at number 73 on their top 100 women artists of the 21st century list.

Extremely impressive, many adore Metamorphosis, but also think highly of 2003’s Santa Claus Lane, 2004’s self-titled Hilary Duff, 2004’s Most Wanted, and 2006’s Dignity. From here, Duff took a short break from her music career before returning in 2015 with Breathe In Breathe Out. Jumping forward, it has been a decade-long hiatus from music since 2015, but in 2026 Duff is back with the anticipated new album, luck… or something.

Excited to reconnect with her listeners,  the once teen idol from Disney and multi-platinum Pop star returns as a far more mature indvidual with luck… or something. Her sixth overall studio album, it arrived on February 20, 2026, through Atlantic Records and features Duff collaborating with her husband, Grammy Award-winning Songwriter/Producer Matthew Koma (Britney Spears, P!nk), with Producer Brian Phillips (Alec Benjamin, Blink-182) also joining the team. Showcasing Duff’s growth as a songwriter and person, the album features 11 songs, including the popular singles “Mature” and “Roommates.” A very personal album, it explores heartbreak, the cycle of time, marriage, and divorce. Furthermore, it offers a unique look into Duff’s life and offers comfort in highly relatable material.

Looking at it closely, “Weather For Tennis” is one of the strongest tracks here and really shows the maturity and confidence of how far Duff has come in her music.  Highlighting a few things that really anyone can relate to, lines like “keep the peace cause I’m a kid of divorce, and you’re the starter of wars, and there’s no winning in yours” are very catchy and highly relatable to anyone all over the world.

Meanwhile, “Roommates” is a fun Pop song that explores the inevitability of time and how, over time, relationships can create resentment. It is essentially a remembrance of what a particular relationship was like in the beginning and how time created resentment. This is as “The Optimist” digs really deep into one’s soul, exploring a bit of trauma with divorce and how it really affects the relationship between father and daughter. It is a longing for the connection that once was.

Joining these standouts, “Mature” is a really stick-it-to-you kind of song with a fun sound. It is the kind of tune that every girl wishes she could say to her ex’s face.
Finally, the album ends with “Adult Size Medium,” a song about reminiscing about Duff’s younger days and how much better she was when she was more naive. To be 23 again would, in fact, be a perfect idea, but would it matter in the end?

All grown up with a strong career in both film and music, Hilary Duff is not going anywhere anytime soon. Shining as bright as ever, Cryptic Rock gives luck…or something 5 out of 5 stars.
