Hong Kong 1941 / Eureka! (2025)

Hong Kong 1941 (Limited Edition Blu-ray Edition Review)

With an estimated 70 to 85 million deaths, World War II is one of the deadliest in recorded history. Simply tragic, several events stand out amidst all the carnage, including the attack on Pearl Harbor by Japan on December 7, 1941. Considered the trigger that resulted in the United States’ full-blown involvement in the conflict, in China, the Empire of Japan also launched an attack on the city of Hong Kong the same morning. Often referenced as the Fall of Hong Kong, Japan’s attack was a declaration of war on Britain, and it went on to occupy the colony.

A dark time for the Chinese people, filled with uncertainty, in the grander scheme of world history, few might know about the state of Hong Kong in 1941. However, a 1984 film entitled Hong Kong 1941 could provide some insight. Directed by British-Chinese Film Director Po-Chih Leong (who also directed films such as Shanghai 1920 and 1998’s Immortality), Hong Kong 1941 (Chinese: 等待黎明) follows the story of a group of Hong Kong natives up against the oppressive occupation of the Japanese. Faced with either conforming to the Japanese will or possible death, a trio of friends, Yip Kim-fei, Han Yuk-nam, and Wong Hak-keung, seek to find a way out.

A saga filled with personal drama (such as love, romance, and family), Hong Kong 1941 paints vivid imagery of what innocent civilians had to face in the area of Hong Kong at the time. Not pretty, you can feel the pain, fear, and frustration of everyone involved, but most of all their helplessness. Something quite daunting, Leong’s Hong Kong 1941 takes a bleak situation and turns it into a tale about how loyalty and friendship can be a shining beacon of hope.

Explaining this further, Wong Hak-keung and Han Yuk-nam are romantically involved, but Han Yuk-nam has deeper feelings for Yip Kim-fei. A very honorable man, Yip Kim-fei, is aware of this, and while he may have feelings for Yip Kim-fei as well, they both manage to stay true to trust and friendship in their attempt to find an exit from Hong Kong together. Honestly, a beautiful sentiment; it is one of those situations that reminds you that love and human connection always prevail, even in the midst of war.

Released in November 1984, Hong Kong 1941 was a massive success in the region, grossing over $7 million and resulting in several award nominations. Furthermore, Chow Yun-fat (who portrays Yip Kim-fei) went on to win the Best Actor award at the 22nd Golden Horse Awards and built a successful film career. At the same time, Cecilia Yip (who plays Han Yuk Nam) also received a nomination for Best Actress at the Hong Kong Film Awards.

All very interesting, still, outside China, there is a strong possibility most have never heard of or seen Hong Kong 1941.
