Cryptic Rock – Devil’s Dildo is certainly a name that catches your attention. The music can best be described as a manic mix of styles that beam classic Punk. First and foremost, where did the inspiration and concept come from for Devil’s Dildo?
Devil’s Dildo – We are delighted to conduct this interview. We were born in the pits of hell, spawned by the devil themselves. Satan gave us the names Debbie and DeeDee Dildo. We decided Devil’s Dildo would be appropriate, since we are spreading filth, lust, debauchery, so forth and so on.
We are constantly inspired by Horror films, kink, and raunchy art. Our songwriting is directly inspired by listening; and we listen to a wide range of genres. Debbie loves Metal and Funk, and DeeDee likes female-fronted Post-Punk and No-Wave. Our inspirations are all thrown into one big witch’s cauldron, and the resulting brew is a titillating combination of genres.
Cryptic Rock – That broad range of inspirations certainly shows. Devil’s Dildo has a theatrical element to them as well. What can you tell us about the persona of the members?
Devil’s Dildo – DeeDee Dildo is the vocalist and Debbie Dildo plays bass. We are satanic twins with matching black hair, draped in fishnets, leather, latex, and spikes. Bratty, snotty, sexy. We are both extremely concentrated versions of our most evil and sexual selves. We dismantle ideologies of repressed sexuality. We critique stigmatized shame and wear our sexuality, and our queerness, proudly.
Cryptic Rock – Your personalities within the music do make for an interesting mix. So, you released your debut EP ...Makes Me Cum! back in November of 2020 via Muddguts Records. Including six wild tracks that are all-around quite intense, what was the process behind putting together these songs?
Devil’s Dildo – The first EP came together in a whirlwind of intense demonic possession… mostly because we had a week to put songs together before our first live show. We really like the way this chaotic environment influenced the sound. Raw, abrasive, fast. In turn, we spent the past two years making a new album in a completely different way, spending a lot of time with the songs and being very deliberate in all elements. We are excited by this contrast. We love projects that are low-budget, DIY, and gritty as hell.
Working from a tight set of limitations makes for a unique creative process. We didn’t have time, money, or gear for the first EP. We have since expanded our resources, but keep the same essence that was birthed from our EP.
Cryptic Rock – Well, within constraints something unique came out. We would be remiss if we did not mention that the album is released in a very unique fashion. (Laughs) A really inventive concept to be honest… what has been the reaction to the release?
Devil’s Dildo – We were very proud of the 7”s… they are actually 7 inches long. (Laughs) We handmade, crafted, and marbled each and every dildo individually. Every dido is unique, not one the same as the other, and includes a removable branded USB with the EP.
It was an insane process that proved to be incredibly challenging and time-consuming. They are truly a labor of demented, maniacal love. We will never, ever, ever be making them again. We are so proud of these art objects, and hope that everyone that got one savors them like we do. (Smiles) Many people have cum, screamed, laughed, and cried. All reactions, and all holes, are encouraged.
Cryptic Rock – (Laughs) As stated, it is a very creative, attention-grabbing way to release music. What is interesting about Devil’s Dildo is there is a serious sense to the songs with
observations about society, but also a Horror-movie vibe as well. Is it a challenge to balance the satire, theatricals, and more serious tones?
Devil’s Dildo – As DeeDee was writing the lyrics, she quickly realized that the scariest Horror movie of all is reality. Our writing blurs the line between the two. First and foremost, DeeDee is a performer. It is impossible to separate her body from her lived experiences. Each lyric is performed through her body and excreted viscerally upon the viewers. The theatrical, the satire, the serious…. it is all the same. And that is the pinnacle of camp.
Cryptic Rock – And that fine line between satire and seriousness is enjoyable. With the EP, you also released two music videos. Can we expect more videos in the future?
Devil’s Dildo – We released two music videos and we loved this process! We made the music video for “Joy” in a seedy love motel in New Jersey, covered in fake blood, latex, and dildos in a heart-shaped bathtub. Jane Pain shot the video alongside our album cover, so the two have the same setting and aesthetic.
The “Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker” video was made during quarantine, and it was truly a family affair. A mortal, human family helped choreograph and shoot the whole video in a rural Pennsylvanian backyard. We had lighting effects from flashlights, handmade fires, and some barnyard-found props.
Our dream is to release a series of Horror shorts to coincide with the new album. Please reach out if you are interested in funding this project.
Cryptic Rock – It would be great to see more music videos to compliment the music. With the EP now out for the past two years, what is next for Devil’s Dildo?
Devil’s Dildo – We recorded a new full-length album, and are strategizing on how to release it into this world. We want this release to be on vinyl, instead of silicone (wink, wink…). Since this project is very visually based, we would love to release a series of videos alongside each song. We also want to take this show on the road baby!! Cumming to a city near you, we are spreading our seed all over the USA and beyond.
Cryptic Rock – (Laughs) There will be much more to see in the future, so people should look out for it all. Last question. On Cryptic Rock we cover a broad range of film but concentrate on Horror
and Sci-Fi. If you are a fan of Horror and/or Sci-Fi films, what are some of your favorites and why?
Devil’s Dildo – (Sighs) That is a hard question! We are Horror fanatics and a lot of our aesthetics and verbiage are all taken from our love of films. So, to answer this big question, we will talk about some of our more direct film references.
The song “Butcher, Bake, Nightmare Maker,” is the iconic alternative name to the film “Night Warning.” That movie is incredibly messed up, pretty gay, and very gory. We stand all of those things.
We take a lot of inspiration from John Waters, and open our live sets with a sample of Mr. David introducing the freak show in the opening scene of “Multiple Maniacs.” The line is an incredible mantra for Devil’s Dildo’s live performances and goes as follows:
“These assorted sluts, fags, dykes, and pimps know no bounds. They have committed acts against God and nature. Acts that by their mere existence would make any decent person recoil in disgust. You want to see them, and we’ve got them. Every possible thing you can think of. Come on ladies, come right up this way.”
And with that, we sign off. Thanks, and keep it filthy!
