Getting better and better, It: Welcome to Derry’s latest episode, The Black Spot, could be one of the most exciting yet. Premiering on HBO and HBO Max on December 7, 2025, it is the second-to-last episode in season 1, which wraps up on Sunday, December 14th, with Winter Fire.
Extremely intense, The Black Spot takes the audience back in time for a look at the origin of the Pennywise the Clown façade that the Galoo has adopted and used as its own. Not only is it a peek into the past, but it also shows the audience the present with the hunt for Grogan (Rider). The Loser’s Club is trying to stay afloat and warn others about the harm that will come their way. Periwinkle is still on the hunt for her father … will he show up to appease his darling daughter?

Last time The Black Spot was the centre of attention, it was ambushed by Bowers (Outerbridge) and his men, and their call for “justice” was answered. They decide to take the law into their own hands since they’re severely convinced that Grogan is guilty of murdering the children of Derry. With only two episodes left in the series, will Bowers and his boys get their man?? While Charlotte (Paige) is trying to pave the way for justice to serve the right way, her husband is dealing with conflicts of his own. Now convinced that he must do the right thing for the people of Derry, he takes matters into his own hands.
The Loser’s Club was last seen tearing each other apart due to the circumstances that befell them while trying to save their friend. This episode is no different, though their relationships have become more solidified through the trauma bonding they shared during their adventures in Derry. They show the audience and each other what it means to be a real friend and be there for each other, no matter what. The Loser’s Club has always been the ultimate friendship goal for audience members of all ages.

Since the last episode, the identity of Periwinkle has been revealed, and her relationship with Pennywise understood, but that doesn’t make this episode’s interaction any less macabre. When reality hits, Periwinkle finally comes to terms with her father’s grim fate. Halloran (Chalk) is also still trying to combat his demons and the part of The Shining that he has opened, with him getting that much closer to the target that the military is trying to acquire.
The director set an excellent tone for the episode with flashback sequences that trace the evolution of Pennywise the Dancing Clown (Skarsgård) and his daughter, Periwinkle (Stowe). It shows how their relationship would shape Ingrid’s evolution and how she viewed her own relationships by the time the show began in the present. Madeline Stowe as Ingrid/Periwinkle is phenomenal; this performance shows her range, from the dramatics of her previous films to the macabre genre that It: Welcome to Derry is beginning to explore.

Eager to see the season 1 finale with Winter Fire, Cryptic Rock gives It: Welcome to Derry’s The Black Spot 5 out of 5 stars.
