Jay Buchanan – Weapons of Beauty (Album Review)

Jay Buchanan 2026

While most famously recognized as the robust voice of Grammy-nominated Rock band Rival Sons, Jay Buchanan spent over a decade prior to joining them making his way as a singer-songwriter on the Southern California music scene. A time of self-discovery for Buchanan, he wrote and performed primarily acoustic, Americana styled of Rock with tints of Soul and Blues. Something that would serve him well as the lead singer and lyricist of Rival Sons, his vocal performances with the band for nearly two decades are best described as muscular, soulful, and full of raw energy.

Factors which make Rival Sons one of the most authentic Modern Rock bands around, their rise has been even and steady with the sensational breakout of Great Western Valkyrie in 2014, leading into richer successes with albums like 2016’s Hollow Bones, 2019’s Feral Roots, and the ambitious and fantastic two albums releases in 2023 with Darkfighter followed by Lightbringer. Focusing on writing fantastic Rock songs with purpose, Buchanan’s unique vocal abilities play a massive role in it all.

Taking all factors of his past and present musical personality into consideration, in 2026, fans have a chance to see the other side of him with the solo album, Weapons of Beauty. A concept decades in waiting, Buchanan had been deeply involved with Rival Sons’ touring and recording schedules, resulting in a shortage of time. Match this with the late 2024 breast cancer diagnosis of his wife of nearly 29 years, and he prioritized staying by her side during the difficult time.

With a lot of life under his belt, reflecting on love, regret, faith, and hope, Buchanan carefully crafted a set of songs he proudly puts out as Weapons of Beauty. Releasing the album on February 6, 2026, under Rival Sons’ Sacred Tongue Recordings in partnership with Thirty Tigers, he also called on long-time Rival Sons’ Producer Dave Cobb (who, in many ways, is the band’s fifth member) to handle the production. Also featuring collaboration with Bassist Brian Allen, Drummer Chris Powell, Guitarist/Pedal Steel Leroy Powell, Guitarist J.D. Simo, and Keyboardist Philip Towns, the end result is a stunningly vivid album blending Country, Folk, and Rock.

Substantially different than the louder, heavier Rival Sons music most have associated with Buchanan, the songs of Weapons of Beauty intimately fit his voice as he lays out stories that capture your heart and soul with each passing word. Consisting of 10 songs, he takes you into the depths of his mind from the get-go with a tribute to love and heartbreak in the lead single “Caroline.” This is while “True Black” is a Gospel-inspired track that leaves you mesmerized by its ability to outline the darker and lighter sides of all of us and the yearning to make good with our time.

Beyond this, many more sensational moments flow through Weapons of Beauty, including “Tumbleweeds,” “The Great Divide,” and “Dance Me To The End of Love.” However, if you are looking for truly breathtaking stop-you-in-your-tracks listens, do not pass up either “Shower of Roses” or the title song “Weapons of Beauty,” where Buchanan lets it all hang out vocally, inevitably leaving you speechless.

Overall, if you are expecting a Rival Sons album, you might be a little taken aback. However, if you have heard the ache in Jay Buchanan’s voice through the years, you would know that Weapons of Beauty is an album he had to make. A man with stories to tell that connect with each of us, Weapons of Beauty is a reminder of how special love is, how important it is to remain gracious, and of the fragility of our mortality. An exceptional album that will soothe your restless heart, Cryptic Rock gives Jay Buchanan’s Weapons of Beauty 5 out of 5 stars.
