Nas and DJ Premier - Light-Years / Mass Appeal (2025)

Nas and DJ Premier – Light-Years (Album Review)

Nas & DJ Premier 2025

Back in 1994, significant hype surrounded the debut album of a rising Hip Hop star from New York City. A typical tactic to raise interest, the difference was… this hype was legitimate. So, who was that MC, and what album in reference? The star was New York City’s Nas, and the album was his debut record, Illmatic. While it may not have been a commercial success initially, Illmatic is widely considered one of the greatest Hip Hop records of all time. Featuring a raw realism, Nas’s lyrical abilities were astounding, and matched with some killer rhythms and beats, it was Hip Hop gold. Featuring a list of top-line producers, you had Large Professor, Pete Rock, A Tribe Called Quest’s Q-Tip, L.E.S., but also the one and only DJ Premier.

Premier, an icon in his own right (as one part of Gang Starr), made a significant impact on Illmatic, producing blister tracks such as “N.Y. State of Mind,” “Memory Lane (Sittin’ in da Park),” and “Represent.” Developing a mutual respect with the young Nas, they would work together again for tracks on 1996’s It Was Written, 1999’s I Am…, and Nastradamus, as well as 2001’s Stillmatic. Creating music that people remember, now, for the first time, Nas and DJ Premier come together for the full collaborative album, Light-Years.

Released on December 12, 2025, through Nas’s own Mass Appeal label, rumblings of such an album were mentioned nearly twenty years earlier, but never became a reality. Yearning to see the project all the way through, Light-Years acts as the book-end to a yearlong campaign of classic Hip Hop artists putting out records through Mass Appeal’s Legend Has It… Series. A great way to wrap up this unforgettable release schedule, Light-Years is Nas’s first studio album since 2023’s Magic 2 and 3, while it is DJ Premier’s third album alone in 2025 (the others with Ransom and Roc Marciano).

With all of this in mind, Light-Years embodies the classic Hip Hop sound, with gritty beats and production that take you back to a time before over-polished modern techniques. Authentic to who these two men are and their artistic vision, Nas sounds invigorated and amply aggressive as he spits lyrics about earned wisdom, while also reflecting on his young years and honing his craft.

An outstanding balance of many elements, with fifteen tracks to work with, some big moments unfold with “GiT Ready,” “NY State Of Mind Pt. 3,” “Welcome The Underground,” “It’s Time” (which heavily samples of the classic Steve Miller Band 1976 “Fly Like an Eagle” track), and “Junkie.” However, you cannot discuss Light-Years without touching on the coolness of “Pause Tapes” (where Nas reflects on how he worked with what he had to make beats back in the day), “Writers” (where he gives shout-outs to graffiti culture), “Bouquet (To The Ladies)” (which shows respect to pioneering women in Hip Hop), and “Sons (Young Kings)” (which draws parallels between raising children and one’s own childhood). All extremely pleasing to the ear, a big bonus comes when Nas teams with AZ for the track “My Story Your Story.”

Altogether, if Nas and DJ Premier’s Light-Years album was something in the back-end of fans’ minds, it is more than merely a fulfillment; it is everything they could ask for and more. That is why Cryptic Rock gives Nas and DJ Premier’s Light-Years 5 out of 5 stars.
