Set to celebrate his 85th birthday in July 2026, Paul Anka is one of the last remaining artists from the golden ‘50s era of Rock-n-Roll still active. Recording his first single at 14 years old in 1956, just a year later, Anka scored a number one hit in 1957 with his iconic song “Diane.” Extremely impressive for such a young man; even more so impressive was that Anka penned the song, too! Far from a one-hit wonder, he went on to have further success with “You Are My Destiny” in 1958, before “Lonely Boy” and “Put Your Head on My Shoulder in 1959, as well as “Puppy Love” in 1960. By the time he was 19, Anka had amassed this list of chart-topping hits, but he was more than a teen idol with a powerful voice; he was a bona fide songwriter.
Growing through the ‘60s and navigating a changing landscape with several more highly charted singles, Anka found the top of those charts yet again a decade late with 1974’s (You’re) Having My Baby,” and “One Man Woman/One Woman Man” and 1975’s “I Don’t Like to Sleep Alone,” all in a duet with Odia Coates. Proving Anka was diverse and adaptable, he continued into the 1980s, striking yet another Top 40 hit in 1983 with “Hold Me ‘Til the Mornin’ Comes.”
Altogether, attaining 48 Hot 100 entries, 10 Top 10 hits, and 3 number one hits, Anka is a legendary performer who has never slowed down. In fact, he has consistently performed live, released studio albums in each of the last eight decades, and now returns in 2026 with his thirtieth, Inspirations of Life and Love. Released a day before Valentine’s Day on February 13, 2026, via Green Hill Music/Sun Label Group, it coincides with the premiere of the must-watch Paul Anka: His Way on HBO/HBO Max. His first album since 2021’s Making Memories, Anka once again unites classic tunes with brand-new ones.
This time, curating eleven tracks for an album, it was recorded primarily in Anka’s home studio, with additional sessions in Budapest, Hungary, featuring the Budapest Scoring Orchestra. Making for a very rich-sounding classic Pop album with lush orchestration, there are also some variations into Country Rock, among other genres. An album that also features some compelling details, such as Anka co-writing a new song titled “Freedom For You And Me (Freedom For The World)” with Jack White, there is also a fresh reimaging of the 1983 co-writing collaboration with Michael Jackson, “Love Never Felt So Good.”
Beyond this, subsequent new originals include “I Just Can’t Wait” (which opens the album with a very Country Rock sensation), “Boulevard” (featuring very introspective lyrics, delicate pianos, and emotional orchestration), and a very romantic and touching reflection of love with “The Last Time I Saw You.” Each sounding delightfully smooth, the companion tracks from the past with a new twist that stand out boldly include “It Was A Very Good Year,” “I Believe,” “That’s Life,” and Anka’s own from 2009, “Let Me Try Again.”
In the end, Paul Anka approaches these songs with years of life on his side. What this means is that you can hear the inflection of wisdom in each word sung, resulting in extremely effective, human performances that will resonate deeply within your soul. A treasure of modern American music, Cryptic Rock applauds Paul Anka and his life’s work, while giving Inspirations of Life and Love 5 out of 5 stars.
