The past week’s Pretty Little Liars promo promised an explosive episode, and boy did it deliver! On Tuesday, January 26th, Freeform aired the brand new episode titled The Gloves Are On, and to say the title fits, would be an understatement. There were a lot of confessions and a lot of feelings revealed. In this episode, the police keep digging into “that night” for more clues and they have now figured out the footage of Aria and Ezra’s little rendezvous was in fact deleted. They do not go to Hanna for answers, they go to Hanna’s mom, Ashley. Desperate, Hanna seeks Lucas’ help—yes he is back—and he willingly agrees to help. The only thing is, the help is irrelevant.
Another character we love to hate is back. That is right, Melissa comes back to aid in her mother’s campaign and only sparks suspicion on Spencer and Caleb’s relationship; more about that later. On the other side of Rosewood, Emily’s mother Pam gets a letter from her daughter’s University and she finds out Emily has been lying to her for years. She never continued college and viewers finally learn why Emily has been quiet about her pills and injections; she clears the air by acknowledging that she is actually taking treatment to donate her eggs. The Liars are convinced that Ezra killed Charlotte to protect Aria, but Aria is still holding on to hope. They all corner Ezra into a confession, but the audience sees another side of him when he snaps in anger and throws them out his apartment. King is the master of throwing hints, but if we learned something from her in this past six and a half years is that if anyone looks like the killer and feels like a killer, they probably are not.
In this episode, the audience also learn what happened to Sara at Radley the day of the accident. They also learn she burned her hands with some cable’s electricity and she blames all the girls for that, especially Emily. She definitely displays the creepy factor after following Emily everywhere; too obvious to be only coincidence. One of the two most shocking moments of this episode were Caleb and Spencer hooking up. Many had hoped that the only relationship they had was a close friendship, but they were shocked when they saw their steamy hook-up session. This will undoubtedly create drama between Hanna and Spencer in the future, even though Hanna swears she is ok with it.
Continuously surprising, perhaps the biggest eye-opener is the fact that the girls are all getting “A” texts again! Granted, the killer’s signature is a devilish face instead of an A, but what matters is that Pretty Little Liars is going back to its roots. As mentioned above, Lucas’ help was irrelevant because, “You know who did it and I’m going to make you talk,” was in the texts the Liars’ received from “A,” ergo the police are probably going to know the truth either way. Airing on Tuesday, February 2nd, Episode 14 New Guys, New Lies promises to deliver yet another intense episode and the infamous show’s quote, “It’s happening again isn’t it?,” is mentioned once more. While fans still have to wait almost a week for that, sit tight, it will definitely be worth it. CrypticRock gives The Gloves Are On 5 out of 5 stars.
