Scott Stapp Shines at Granada Theater Lawrence, KS 3-25-14

scott cropped newWhen you think of some of the early 2000’s most prolific rock vocalists chances are Scott Stapp comes to mind.  Rising to fame as lead vocalist of top-selling band Creed, Stapp built a name for himself as one of the most recognized voices and lyricists of the early part of the decade.  Now in 2014, Stapp hits the road to play live shows for the first time since his reunion run with Creed two years ago.  As if the tour announcement was not exciting enough, Stapp also announced that he will donate 10 percent of all merchandise sales through his online store to Music For Relief in support of the recent devastation in the Philippines from Typhoon Haiyan.  With a warm sense of giving in the backdrop, the tour comes on the heels of Stapp’s critically acclaimed sophomore solo album Proof of Life (2013).  Kicking off on March 19th, Stapp made his third stop on the tour at Granada Theater in Lawrence, KS on Tuesday March 25th to play in front of a packed room of beloved fans.

Two talented local bands by the name of For the Broken and Syn City Cowboys warmed up the stage for Stapp nicely.  Both guitar driven acts, Syn City Cowboys have a new rock single “ Bad side” that has just hit rock airwaves and is making some noise. This band is also slated to play at RockFest 2014 in their hometown of Kansas City May 31st.  Both these bands are well worth checking out as they develop.

Stapp came out inspired and ready to rock, opening with his new single “Slow Suicide”.  Providing a good balance for die-hard Creed fans, Stapp followed by playing a powerful rendition of Creed’s “What if”.  His band was tight and showed good chemistry on stage, while Stapp really aired out his lungs singing each tune with intensity and passion.  Keeping to a pattern throughout the rest of the evening, Stapp continued to play a solo song then a Creed song.  Playing tracks off Proof of Life like “New Day Coming”, “Breakout”, and “Hit Me More” mixed nicely with Creed hits like “My Own Prison”, “Higher”, and “My Sacrifice”.

Stapp’s performance went on for almost two hours which was a surprise and a well received treat for the audience.  There was even a spotting of Lajon Witherspoon of Sevendust in the audience; who now resides in Kansas City. Stapp not only played a strong set of music he also revealed himself openly to his fans, speaking of good and bad memories in his life and music career.  This connection was felt deep within those who love Stapp’s music and look for a common bond with him as a person.  The set wound down with rousing applause and the audience begging for more.  That wish was granted with an encore including the massive hit”With Arms Wide Open” and “Proof of Life”.

This was unquestionably an evening Granada Theater will not forget.  Filled with great music and energy, Stapp proved that he is a true rocker which can still put on an excellent performance.  Creed fans rejoice, Stapp is back and the Proof of Life tour 2014 was not to be missed.
