Some might say that the natural state of humanity is struggle. An integral part of our experience, through it we find resilience, strength, and most importantly, our character. The case for many among us, the singer-songwriter known as Seal, is an inspirational story of facing the struggle and achieving what some might presume is impossible.
Born in Paddington, London, Seal had a turbulent childhood, raised by a foster family early on, and extreme difficulties with his biological parents, before running away at 15 years old. Essentially homeless, he found shelter where he could, worked odd jobs, and, despite it all, earned a two-year diploma in architecture. Still, everything he had experienced to that point in life left a burning desire to do more, and in his early twenties, Seal pursued his God-given gift to sing.
Moving between various bands and countries through much of the ‘80s, Seal finally had a breakthrough in 1990 when he provided lyrics and vocals for DJ Adamski’s track “Killer.” A song that reached number one in the UK, Seal signed with ZTT Records, where he worked with esteemed producer Trevor Horn on his 1991 self-titled album. The start of something special: 1991’s Seal reached number 1 in the UK, peaked at number 27 on the US Billboard 200, and yielded the smash hit single “Crazy.” At this point in his late twenties, it seemed as if Seal came out of nowhere, but beyond anyone’s knowledge, Seal’s rise was years in the making.
A stunning story of defying the odds, Seal became one of the most successful artists of the 1990s, winning four Grammy Awards and selling over 20 million records. A result of his unique mix of Soul, Dance, and Pop, Seal’s textured, dynamic vocal range is distinctly his own, while his work with Trevor Horn on many of his recordings created a distinctive, sophisticated sound. Now in 2026, Seal celebrates the release of his new live album, Purpose: Celebrating 30 Years of the Classic Albums Seal I and Seal II.

What can only be described as a very special release, it is more than just Seal’s fifth live studio album (and the first since 2009’s Live in Brooklyn). Purpose is a documentation of his life’s work and an intimate look into his epic two albums, 1991’s Seal and 1994’s Seal II. A live concert film recorded at The Venetian Theatre in Las Vegas in 2024, in a carefully curated ten-song set of fan-favorite songs from those first two albums, such as “Crazy,” “Killer,” “Future Love Paradise,” and of course, “Kiss from a Rose.” Joined by other Seal songs such as 2003’s “Get It Together” and “Love’s Divine,” what makes the set even more special is that Trevor Horn himself joined the six-piece band behind Seal as bassist/musical director. Sounding simply stunning, the mood is very personal, and Seal delivers an impassioned performance before what appears to be a very engaged audience.
Released just a day before Valentine’s Day on February 13, 2026, through Mercury Studios, it adds intrigue by being available not only to listen to but also as a live concert film. Put together in four formats, you have a 4K UHD and Blu-ray combo pack (which offers you the concert films on a 4K and Blu-ray disc), Blu-ray and CD combo pack (which has the concert film on the Blu-ray, and live album on the CD), a 4LP vinyl set (which is great for collectors), and of course, the most accessible digital audio and video (available for streaming and downloads).
With many options, it is honestly up to the individual to decide which to acquire; however, perhaps the Blu-ray and CD combo pack is the most complete because you get the live concert film in pristine clarity on the Blu-ray, plus the live album on a CD format, in the event you want to solely listen. With that in mind, the live concert film is unique in that it is more than just the live set; it also blends interviews with Seal and Trevor Horn, recorded separately from the concert and edited into the fabric of it all. This inviting direction makes it more than a straightforward concert film; it is a very personal reflection on Seal’s formative mainstream success, which shaped his artistic intent for years to come.
Overall, Purpose: Celebrating 30 Years of the Classic Albums Seal I and Seal II is a must-have for all fans of Seal and the undeniable power of music. That is why Cryptic Rock gives this release 5 out of 5 stars.
