Sleep Theory – Afterglow (Album Review)

Sleep Theory 2025

Focus, determination, and action are imperative when manifesting a vision. Combined with work ethic, sacrifice, and passion, nine times out of ten, success is in your grasp. Growing up in the South, Cullen Moore developed a passion for music, listening to a wide range of genres, including Rock, Metal, R&B, and Country. Taking inspiration from his dad, who was himself an R&B singer, Moore began to forge his own musical path. Following in his family’s footsteps, Moore even served in the military, much like his father (who retired as a lieutenant colonel after more than two decades of service).

Taking these experiences with him, in 2019, after his service in the army, Moore began plotting his plan to form his own musical world. Would he go in as a solo artist? A thought, but instead his ideas quickly snowballed into becoming a full-fledged band known as Sleep Theory. Joined by Bassist Paolo Vergara, soon came brothers Daniel Pruitt on guitar and harsh vocals, and Ben Pruitt on drums.

A solid crew set to make an impact, they quickly got to work and put out their debut single “Another Way” in 2023. From here, they released “Numb” (also in 2023), which peaked at Number Nine on the US Mainstream Rock Charts. Impressive, the EP Paper Hearts followed in 2023 (earning multi-millions of streams in the months after the release), but 2024 found the temperature rising higher for Sleep Theory as their single “Fallout” hit Number Two on Mainstream Rock Charts, before “Stuck in My Head” hit Number One!

A genuinely fascinating story, 2025 is set to be the biggest year to date for Sleep Theory as their debut album, Afterglow, blazes a whole new trail. Released on May 16, 2025, through Epitaph, the album has made it into the US Billboard 200 (no small feat) as the band embarks on their first-ever headlining tour through the end of June. The moments Moore and Sleep Theory have worked for, the question some might ask is – Who is Sleep Theory, and why is there so much buzz?

A very valid inquiry, the best way to describe Sleep Theory is a mix of Modern Metal and R&B with irresistible vocal hooks that stick with you. The result of a passionate delivery from Moore, you can feel the conviction in each word sung as he is conveying tales of frustration, lost love, and more.

Drawn out over twelve songs, Afterglow is a blistering debut full-length that features the highly charted singles “Numb,” “Fallout,” “Stuck in My Head,” “Paralyzed,” “Static,” and “III.” These heavy hitters, joined with “Gravity,” have amassed Sleep Theory millions upon millions of streams. However, yet again, is Sleep Theory on the level of the hype? That depends on who you ask, but their songs have all the ingredients to grab your attention with plenty of melody, heaviness, and catchy Pop sensibility that has mass appeal.

A style that seems less common in today’s modern Hard Rock and Metal scene, Sleep Theory’s approach is a winning combination that transcends eras. What this means is that fans of Sevendust, as well as those who dig I Prevail or Bad Omens, will find something they like here. Breaking down this with Afterglow, clear standouts include the relatable “Static,” which cathartically releases the rage inside due to the overwhelming modern digital presence, the unforgettable “Stuck In My Head,” the powerful “Fallout,” and “Just A Mistake.” This is joined by the emotional “Gravity,” the album’s title track, followed by the crushing energy of “Paralyzed” and the very different “Words Are Worthless.”

Overall, Sleep Theory is proof that melodic singing is still a driving force in Rock-n-Roll music. With Afterglow out, Sleep Theory should only continue to pick up even more steam in the coming year. Only time will tell where it goes from here, but you should familiarize yourself with Sleep Theory, because Cryptic Rock gives Afterglow 4.5 out of 5 stars.
