The Krays - The Mafia Connection

The Krays: The Mafia Connection (Documentary Review)

In the world of organized crime two of the most infamous figures historically have been England’s Ronald “Ronnie” Kray and Reginald “Reggie” Kray. Twin brothers, with their gang called the Firm they committed many crimes, but many rumours still surround the two even decades later. With this, many stories have been written about them, several documentaries produced, and even feature films like 1990’s The Krays starring Spandau Ballet’s Martin Kemp and Gary Kemp. An endless fascination of many, now in 2024 a new documentary film called The Krays: The Mafia Connection emerges.

Released on July 1, 2024 to DVD through High Fliers Films, plus available digitally through places like Amazon Prime Video, Richard John Taylor’s directed The Krays: The Mafia Connection is a rare look into the lives of the Kray Brothers. Looking back, Ronnie and Reggie Kray had made themselves a household name by the mid-1950s. Known by some to have hearts of gold or unmatched tempers, their influence in the criminal underground made them legends for generations to come.  This new film centers around interviews with friends and family from the Krays past; giving an
unadulterated view of these prominent and well-known brothers whose misadventures and chaotic lifestyle made headlines across the country.

As mentioned, there have been many films and novels that have made Reggie and Ronnie Krays the subject of conversation. However, The Krays: The Mafia Connection is by far one of the most intriguing of all because of voices involved which go along with images of the past from firsthand resources. In all, each of those interviewed give a heartfelt recounting of their life and times surrounding the notorious twins.

Beyond this, one of the most interesting aspects of the film is that it shows the look of admiration that some had for the Krays Brothers, even though to the rest of the world they were regarded as ruthless monsters… especially when they had certain ties to members of an outside organization. If anything, the film is evidence that even the toughest kind of people have the softest heart and golden personality.

Simply put, The Krays: The Mafia Connection is a documentary in the purest form. Yes, it centers around the criminal underground and the speculations as to whether the Kray Brothers had connections to the mob, but there are no special locations or camera tricks here. There is no epic soundtrack and generic lighting. There are no special celebrity guests, or anything like that, just amazing stories with a soulful retelling. That is why Cryptic Rock recommends this documentary, giving The Krays: The Mafia Connection 5 out of 5 stars.
