When you have put countless hours of work into something, calling it quits is not an option. Exactly the mentality UK band The Sherlocks took on in early 2020 when brothers, Bassist Andy Davidson and Guitarist Andy Davidson, opted to leave, exploring other endeavors.
A heavy blow to a group of friends and siblings who started the band together ten years earlier, Lead Songwriter/Vocalist/Guitarist Kiaran Cook knew they had come too far to pack it up. To explain how far, at the time, The Sherlocks had already achieved two Top Twenty albums in the UK and had toured around Europe and the USA. Playing with Liam Gallagher, Kaiser Chiefs, and The Kooks, the band had built on the dream, so why squash it now?
So, Kiaran Cook and his Brother/Drummer Brandon Cook rebuilt the band, bringing on Guitarist Alex Procter and Bassist Trent Jackson in late 2020, on their way to release a new album in 2021 called World I Understand. Yet another chart topper in the UK, The Sherlocks continued to tour and build a strong reputation as a superior live band. Keeping monumentum, in 2023, they were putting out their most successful album to date, People Like Me & You (which hit Number Four on UK charts), while they head out on their biggest UK tour to date.
Seizing the moment and feeling inspired, the band returns in 2025 with their fifth album, Everything Must Make Sense. Initially scheduled for a February release, it was pushed to May 16th, but not a moment too soon, as the band campaigns to achieve their first-ever Number One album. Bold, but not impossible, because Everything Must Make Sense! could be the most dynamic of Sherlock’s albums yet.
Teaming with David Radha-Jones (a talented producer who has worked with Boston Manor, Wargasm, among others), they create a full-sounding album that will immediately inject energy into any room. Led by colorful singles like “Death of Me,” “Man on the Loose,” the must-listen “Bones,” and the album’s title track, the tempo is electric while the melodies and hooks are infectious. Combining rhythmic tightness, strong songwriting, and Kiaran’s standout vocals, Everything Must Make Sense! is punchy, yet smooth Alternative Rock of the highest order.
Mirroring the feeling of a live performance, there is no question that The Sherlocks carefully released specific songs leading up to the album itself with one purpose: to get you moving. However, the remainder of Everything Must Make Sense! has an equally even and enjoyable balance. For example, “28” grabs you with a mellow start before a steady build to explosive guitars, “Better Alone” has its own unique pace, and “Here Comes the Rain” is perhaps the most exciting song of all, tucked at the back end of the album.
Overall, The Sherlocks have become a perfect blend of Alternative and Synthrock that puts them among the elite in the UK scene, like Muse or Editors. Sharp and full of life, Everything Must Make Sense! should very well become their first Number One, because Cryptic Rock gives it 5 out of 5 stars.
