The whole idea of an EP versus an LP release is one that many Heavy Metal bands toe the line with from time to time. Something select fans are fickle about, in reality, both formats can be valuable at different points in a band’s career. In the case of Sweden’s Tribulation, who recently put out a four-song collection entitled Hamartia, the EP certainly is quite beneficial.
Released on April 7th, 2023 via Century Media Records, the latest effort is not only their first new music in two years, but also first to feature their newest member, Guitarist Joseph Tholl. Working alongside Adam Zaars, the two guitarists were able to form a writing bond that works quite well with Hamartia. Rounding it all out, Vocalist/Bassist Johannes Andersson, along with Drummer Oscar Leander, the complete lineup creates a whirlwind of entertainment.
It all starts with the title-track, commencing with full-blown blackened vocals, but soon joined by guitars and drums which stir up some Gothic Rock vibes. A good blend that brings new life to a band that is constantly morphing, “Axis Mundi” then delivers some Melodic Death Metal riffs that descend nicely into occult-styled vocals. Factors which lean the track to a more Death Rock sound, Tribulation never sets strict rules with their song structure, and because of such, they seem to flourish when creating parts that all seem to fit together.
Moving on, the third track, “Hemoclysm,” travels yet again through a selected mix of sub-genres; creating a unique style that is still unmistakably Tribulation. Which leads us to the finale where they offer an interesting twist to Blue Öyster Cult’s “Vengeance (The Pact).” A very bizarre rendition, amazingly, it is quite a success because the band stays true to the Blue Öyster Cult style (with some of the clean vocals and riffs), yet still while managing to mix in their own energy.
Although Hamartia is short, it can be listened to over and over without much boredom. A pleasant entry into their body of work, the EP shows there is still a bright future for Tribulation… even in the darkest, most sinister way possible. That is why Cryptic Rock gives Hamartia 4.5 out of 5.
