Yellowjackets Season 2 Official Soundtrack: Music from the Original Series (Soundtrack Review)

Amidst the overly saturated world of television series out there presently, there are some that rise to the surface. Hard to find what to tune into, especially if you actually have a life outside ‘binging’ media, one well worth checking out is Showtime’s Yellowjackets. A Horror-themed series featuring a stellar cast that includes everyone from Sophie Nélisse, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sophie Thatcher, to Tawny Cypress, Juliette Lewis, and Christina Ricci, what truly sells Yellowjackets is the story.

Building a foundation on this intriguing quality, and character development, Season one premiered in 2021 with ten episodes. Well-received, it returned on March 26, 2023 for a second season complete with nine new episodes in-hand. Also acclaimed, one of the complimentary features of the series has no question been the soundtrack. One which features largely ‘90s Alternative Rock, Season 2’s track selections could be one of the best soundtracks of any modern series in some time.

That in mind, Yellowjackets Season 2 Official Soundtrack became available to the public digitally, and on CD, as of September 1, 2023 through Universal Music. Complete with sixteen tracks, the soundtrack includes well-known tracks from Nirvana, The Cranberries, Veruca Salt, Garbage, Pulp, Live, 4 Non Blondes, and even Papa Roach. Really a stellar compilation, beyond these, you also have Alanis Morissette’s cover of the original Yellowjackets’ theme song “No Return”; both as an extension version, and as the “Lottie’s Dream Sequence” one utilizes in the series. Originally composed by Craig Wedren and Anna Waronk, Morissette offers a great take on it that is equally as haunting, but a bit heavier. Joining this there is a really unique cover of No Doubt’s “Just A Girl” by Florence + The Machine. If this was not enough, the soundtrack also has plenty more, including the single “Sit Right Down,” performed by John Cameron Mitchell, Wedren, Waronker, and yes, Elijah Wood.

Overall, this is a soundtrack that stands apart from many others. Offering tons of familiarity, it also creates moods if you are a fan of Yellowjackets, as it reinvents mind imagery of scenes in the series. And if you are a lover of vinyl, on December 1st two different LP editions arrived; including a standard 2LP black and gold vinyl edition. A great gift for yourself, a fan of Yellowjackets, or simply someone who loves great Alternative Rock, Cryptic Rock gives the Yellowjackets Season 2 Official Soundtrack 5 out of 5 stars.
