In 2024, several new Comedies have been released, and one of the newest is Another Happy Day. Available for streaming as of October 1, 2024 through Gravitas Ventures, the film is the writing and directorial feature debut of Nora Fiffer. With a cast including Lauren Lapkus (Orange is the New Black series, Good Girls series), Carrie Coon (Gone Girl 2014, Ghostbusters: Afterlife 2021), and Marilyn Dodds Frank (Mom and Dad 2017, Our Father 2021), Another Happy Day is not just any Comedy, but a modern one about postpartum depression.
Something many sadly suffer with, sometimes humor is the best medicine. With this in mind, Lauren Lapkus stars as Joanna, a first-time mother figuring her way out into the world of motherhood. This is while Joanna (Lapkus) is an artist who also happens to be a first-time mother with post-partum depression. Married and lonely, she decides to reach out to her lonesome Aunt Miriam (Marilyn Dodds Frank) who she has not spoken to in years. With this, she hopes to find only a companion and a friend, but after spending time with Aunt Miriam, she realizes she now has another child.
As mentioned, this is not an everyday Comedy, and you could argue that Another Happy Day is truly the first of its kind. This film shows that not only is motherhood stressful, which most of the audience is aware of, but it also that postpartum depression is not something that new mothers should be ashamed of. Any depression has always been seen with a stigma that one is sick and cannot be cured but that truly is not the case.
Not only does Nora Fiffer’s Another Happy Day push boundaries showing their point of view in dealing with postpartum depression, but it also shows the conventional family paradigm. Simply put, it is ok to be unconventional in a traditional world. Overall, Another Happy Day is a heartwarming and comedic film that surpassed audience expectations when dealing with such a touchy subject. This is why Cryptic Rock gives it 5 out of 5 stars.
