Blood Star (2024)

Blood Star (Movie Review)

If you are into True Crime and know that trust should be taken with a grain of salt, you have heard the saying, “If you want to see a man’s true colors, give him a badge and a little bit of power.” For decades, this statement has run rampant. From police corruption to even serial killers playing the role of a cop… how far does one go with their ‘power’ though? Thinking this over for a minute, 2024’s Grimmfest saw a significant turnout and premiered a shockingly interesting film called Blood Star. The directorial debut of Lawrence Jacomelli, this new film starring Britni Camacho (The Rookie 2021, I’m a Virgo 2023) and John Schwab (Zero Dark Thirty 2012, Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan series) reach digital platforms everywhere on October 7, 2024.

Labeled a Survival Thriller, Blood Star follows a young woman named Bobbie (Camacho) immersed in a game of cat and mouse with a psychopathic sheriff who wants to do more than mess with her. A tense viewing experience, this film takes on the Horror Thriller genre and lives up to the Thriller part. Everyone has been told, “You can’t trust anyone.” With that in mind, most women drawn to the darker parts of history, those of a true crime nature, understand the concept of being cautious. A young woman on the road at night, or in a more secluded area, is vulnerable. In Blood Star, Bobbie is a young woman traveling on a desert road for more than several hours… and this is extremely dangerous. So, to say that Blood Star can instill fear in a young woman is an understatement.

Laying this out there, Blood Star does a good job of keeping one on the edge of their seat. Sheriff Bilstein (Schwab) does set off several alarm bells right from the get-go. Furthermore, while some actors belong on a B-rated list, Camacho and Schwab are not two of them, because their performances are phenomenal. Having this going for it, Blood Star also has the bonus of a simple yet terrifying script and sticks to it throughout… even leading to a few surprises close to the end.

However, what drives Blood Star to the heart is that something like this could legitimately happen in the real world.  Then, on top of the acting and script, the soundtrack of Felix Lindsell-Hales (Sex Education series, Black Cake 2023) is quite solid. As many know, music can make or break a film, and as for Blood Star, the music seriously helps out.

Overall, Blood Star is a solidly filmed effort with thrills and nail-biting moments. That is why Cryptic Rock gives Lawrence Jacomelli’s debut feature film 5 out of 5 stars.
