One of rock’s most beloved vocalists, Bret Michaels, continues to partake in heavy touring in 2014 with the Life Rocks Tour. With the success of his solo album, Jammin’ with Friends (2013), this is the second consecutive year the singer hits the road alone with the last Poison tour being the Rock of Ages Tour in 2012 with Def Leppard and Lita Ford. Keeping fans satisfied and hungry for more, Michaels made a return to Long Island, NY for the third time in a year; this time performing at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa as part of the Music Under The Stars 2014 free concert series. Disregarding the threat of heavy rain in the forecast, thousands of people showed up at the park grounds Monday July 14th with blankets and lawn chairs ready for a good night of rock-n-roll.
After a brief introduction from local representatives, Michaels and his band came out with many rushing to the front to get closer to the action. Starting off with the Poison tune “Talk Dirty To Me”, the mix of heavy guitars and Michaels’ soaring vocals filled the air with excitement. Proclaiming his love for Long Island, the audience responded with screams so loud they could be heard miles away. Playing the classic Lynyrd Skynyrd track “Sweet Home Alabama”, Michaels broke out his blues harp, aka harmonica, and kept the party rolling. Projecting a sense of enthusiasm into the crowd, Michaels and his band went into “Your Momma Don’t Dance” and another rocker in “Look What The Cat Dragged In”. At this point fans could care less about the raindrops, which began to collect at a faster rate, as they were enthralled by the stage presence of the band.
Slowing down the tempo slightly, Michaels spoke to everyone and dedicated “Something to Believe In” to all the countries military as he played the track acoustically. The touching moment kept the emotions riding high and no time was wasted as Michaels jumped into “Unskinny Bop”. Defiant to be beat by the storm, the band was instructed they had time for one more song before the real heavy precipitation rolled in. With universal disappointment felt by Michaels and his followers to conclude the evening so quickly, the band jammed to “Nothing But A Good Time”. Immersed in the wave of applauds showering him, along with rain drops, Michaels was ever so gracious to everyone who came out regardless of the weather.
While the evening may have been abbreviated due to nature, it was still one hell of a fun time for everyone involved. Michaels continues to be the firecracker on stage that everyone keeps coming out to see time after time. Judging by the dedication Michaels has to performing live, fans can almost guarantee he will be back to bring a rock-n-roll party to Long Island very soon.
