Come Back To Me (Movie Review)

Come Back To Me is the latest psychological horror movie by Base Productions and Idiot Savant Pictures. Released July 25, 2014, the story is based on the book The Resurrectionist by Wrath James White and written/directed by Australian native Paul Leyden. Come Back To Me is like a silent but hard thud to the back of one’s head – just when you think you have a grasp of what is going on, you get walloped again.

Set in Las Vegas, NV, the film tells the story of married couple Sarah (Katie Walder, Shelter 2007) and Josh (Matt Passmore, The Glades 2010). Sarah is doing her dissertation for her graduate degree, while Josh is a croupier at a local casino. Three months prior, Sarah was left scarred and a bit rattled after banging her head on the steering wheel during a car accident.  She relies on her pregnant doctor friend, Leslie (Laura Gordon, Saw V 2008), who has so far talked her through her anxiety. Sarah is going along fairly well until the day their creepy new neighbor, Dale (Nathan Keyes, The Kings of Summer 2013), moves in across the road. Dale seems to have a dark past, and almost the instant he moves in, Sarah experiences extreme and violent night terrors and blackouts, so vivid they throw her into a tailspin.

At times, Sarah wakes up in completely different places from where she went to sleep, and often there is blood on her clothes without any explanation.  She cannot understand what is happening to her, and when she discovers she is pregnant, despite Josh being sterile, her world  spirals even further out of control.  Sarah’s night terrors cannot be tamed, and even anti-anxiety medication does little to help. As Sarah’s sanity starts to unravel, she loses the ability to tell the difference between dreams and reality.

Convinced that Dale is behind the strange events, she takes Leslie’s advice to install a security camera in her bedroom to capture her night terrors and see if Dale is involved. What shows up on the camera completely blows both their minds, and Sarah cannot believe what she sees. Leslie finds herself tied to Sarah’s mess with her delivery date drawing closer. How will she protect herself, Sarah and her baby? Sarah must summon all the strength she can to uncover the truth, and stop the evil from either driving her completely insane or outright killing her.

Come Back To Me has a very original story line – with so many twists and turns, the audience will get whiplash before it ends. While it may be frustrating at times when Sarah is going between dreams and reality, it is important to stick with it, because the result will be an in-depth, tightly woven story with an ending that will surprise and delight. A must watch for all fans of psychological horror, but also contains enough blood and gore to please all horror fans.  CrypticRock gives Come Back To Me 5 out of 5 stars.
