In Greek mythology, Euphrosyne is one of the three Kharites (Charites) and the goddess of good cheer, mirth, and joy. Having the power to heal, she is a goddess with depth and intrigue. Interestingly enough, Euphrosyne could be a source of hope in dark times, and that is precisely the case with the Greek band taking the same name.
Out of Athens, Euphrosyne is a relatively new Blackened Metal band coming together in 2021. Led by Vocalist Efi Eva and Guitarist Alex Despotidis, they released a couple of singles in 2021 and a striking seven-track EP in 2022 entitled Keres. A mixture of Black Metal, Doom Metal ambiance, Jazz, and other elements, the EP left an impression that, with Eva’s dynamic, harsh, and singing vocals in tow, raised an alert that Euphrosyne had something brewing.
Moving forward, later in 2022, the core of Eva and Despotidis, fortifying the lineup with the addition of George Gazis (bass) and Stelios Pepinidis (drums), began working on new music. Teaming up with Sweden’s Black Lion Records (a label that has featured acts like Ablaze My Sorrow and Vesperian Sorrow, among others), the first glimpse into their new material arrived in late 2024 with the release of “Mitera,” which builds from haunting subtlety to darkly melodic, heavy Black Metal.
A song that offered a fantastic glimpse into Euphrosyne’s future plans, more was revealed on March 21, 2025, with the impressive debut full-length album Morus. An album that took shape from grief and sorrow that Despotidis felt in the wake of losing his mother to cancer in 2017, anyone who has lived through such an event knows it can change your entire perspective. A pain you would not wish even on your nemesis; the process of healing the wounds can be arduous. Different for everyone, the music and vocal emotion that project the lyrics of Morus evoke an array of emotions, ranging from anger, sadness, regret, and longing.
The effects of releasing darkness from the soul, as Euphrosyne’s debut album, Morus, is sure to earn them much more attention. An album mixed and mastered by Septicflesh Guitarist Psychon, if you are a fan of atmospheric Blackened Doom Metal with tints of Gothic and Progressive Metal, you will find immense interest in Euphrosyne.
Having already performed alongside the likes of Rotting Christ and set to play New Long Fest 2025 in Néa Mákri, Greece (the same weekend as Pop Rock hitmaker Tiffany), the weekend of July 26, 2025, more and more listeners are sure to awaken to Euphrosyne and what they are all about. What is that exactly? Simple. It is about finding beauty in darkness and creating music from it that can offer a haven for both their creative souls and listeners alike.
