Out of the Sheffield, England, comes the exciting young band calling themselves The Sherlocks. Who exactly are The Sherlocks? Well, you do not need to be a detective who makes ingenious deductions to figure that out, they are a Rock-n-Roll band! Best described as an Alternative Rock band combining melodic electric guitars with catchy vocal lines, they could easily be seen on the bill with other standout English Rock bands such as Editors, Muse, or South Africa’s Civil Twilight.
Begun some time ago, through hard work, the four-piece released their debut full-length, Live for the Moment, last year and promptly completed their first ever tour of the USA in its support. Now a little less than a year since the album’s release, The Sherlocks continue to build on success, developing a strong fanbase, completing a killer UK run opening for Oasis’ Liam Gallagher, and yes, returning to the USA once again! Elate to be back across the Atlantic, Lead Guitarist/Vocalist Kiaran Crook sat down to talk the work behind their debut album, touring, and plans for the future.
CrypticRock.com – The Sherlocks have been established for some years now, and in recent years the band has begun building some momentum. First, tell us, what has the journey of The Sherlocks been like thus far?
Kiaran Crook – It’s been a rollercoaster ride to be honest… but an interesting journey. We’re taking on the world one country at a time!
CrypticRock.com – Awesome, it has to be exciting. The band has a very energetic sound, and it was in 2017 the band released their debut, Live for the Moment. Seeing as you had released several singles over the past couple of years, how exciting was it to get the full-length album out there?
Kiaran Crook – Incredible! It’s what most bands dream of… and the fact we were able to record an album in a top studio and release on a label means a lot to us. The album was long awaited and I feel like we silenced a lot of the doubters when it was released.
CrypticRock.com – Yes, Live for the Moment is a wonderful album that showcases the sound of quite a polished band. What was the writing and recording process like for the album?
Kiaran Crook – The writing process was the same as it’s always been… I wrote the songs on my own in my conservatory… and then bring it to the band and we smash it out until it sounds good…. and seeing as it was our debut, the songs were really well gigged so everyone knew exactly what to do when recording.
CrypticRock.com – It all seemed to work out well. Very often people try and compare a band to others that came before them, but it really seems like The Sherlocks are influenced by many different styles. What would you say some of your songwriting influences are?
Kiaran Crook – As a songwriter, I take influences from the likes of James, Oasis, Paul Weller… and I quite like some spoken word stuff which gives me ideas. Other than that… I’m constantly making notes on my phone about everything and anything, phrases that everyone uses.
CrypticRock.com – It is a good habit to jott those ideas down. It is a little less than a year since Live for the Moment was released. Now you are amidst a North American tour which began on April 21st. Your second trip to The States, is the buzz still the same for you and the band?
Kiaran Crook – Yeah, there seems to be a buzz starting again, like in the UK. It’s like starting back in the day, we love the element of building the gigs up and grafting. We know it’s going to be a slog but we enjoy the ride! It’s nice to come across the pond and people knowing our songs!
CrypticRock.com – That has to be a great feeling. This return to North America comes at the heels of your UK supporting slot for Oasis’ own Liam Gallagher. Would you say that run was a good learning experience for the band?
Kiaran Crook – Yeah, it was the first tour we’ve ever supported anyone across a full tour, which is crazy to say how many years we’ve been touring. We loved seeing how the bigger production worked backstage with catering etc. Liam’s a top man and we’re thankful for him inviting us on the tour.
CrypticRock.com – It sounds like a tour to remember. With Live for the Moment at your disposal to perform track for track if you so shall like, for those who have not check out The Sherlocks’ live yet, are there some other surprises the set may offer?
Kiaran Crook – We just play a Rock-n-Roll show every night, it’s always a party!!
CrypticRock.com – Well, people should certainly check out the show. Interestingly, the band is comprised of yourself, your brother Brandon, as well as Josh and Andy, who are also brothers. What is that dynamic like working with essentially all family?
Kiaran Crook – We are a very tight knit unit, we’re a pack!
CrypticRock.com – The dynamic works! Last question. We also cover Horror and Sci-Fi films on CrypticRock. If you are a fan of either or both genres, what are some of your favorites and why?
Kiaran Crook – Brandon loves Stranger Things. The music on the series is great!
