CrypticRock is saddened to have learned Slayer guitarist Jeff Hanneman has died at the age of 49. The tragic news was confirmed by a press release by Slayer earlier this evening.

Hanneman passed away today, May 2nd, at 11AM PST this morning in his home. Hanneman was forced to take a leave of absence from Slayer after contracting necrotizing fasciitis, most likely contracted from a spider bite. Necrotizing fasciitis has not been official named the cause of death of Hanneman though.  He passing has been attributed to liver failure in an official press release sent out by Slayer’s publicist.

The official press release reads:

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

This is very sad news for metal fans worldwide. Hanneman is an iconic guitarist in the metal scene and will sorely be missed by all fans. R.I.P. Jeff Hanneman your music lives forever in the heart of metal fans.
