A relatively fresh name on the Modern Metal scene, LUNA KILLS is a four-piece band from Kuopio, Finland, that came together in 2019. Comprised of Vocalist Lotta Ruutiainen, Guitarist Samuli Paasineva, Bassist Lassi Peltonen, and Drummer Jimi Kinnunen, LUNA KILLS has a sound that mixes Alternative Metal and Electronic music into something fresh and energized.
Not overwhelming like some other Metal acts that seem to concentrate on beating you over the head with brutality, LUNA KILLS possesses a potent heaviness without sacrificing melody and catching vocal hooks that add texture to the music. Collectively creating this unique sound, it would be foolish to overlook the dynamics and charisma of Ruutianien as a vocalist who seems to interject more classical stylings, such as Jazz, into Heavy Metal, where unhinging screams act as an accent. A delightful mix, LUNA KILLS has steadily released songs over the last few years, made an impression as a live band around Europe, and is now taking the next big step with their debut studio album, DEATHMATCH.
Released on April 4, 2025, through SharpTone Records, the album includes several popular tracks such as “slay ur enemies,” “sugar rush,” “LEECH,” and “WAVES.” Each has its quirky qualities, and while the tempos vary, the attack remains even and intense. This leads to the addictive nature of the album’s lead track, “love u,” which could be one of the album’s highlights.
That said, there are still many more bold moments to experience, such as “SADIST,” “burn the world with me,” and “hallucinate.” Combined with the pre-album releases and “love u,” plus more, these make DEATHMATCH one of the sharpest and most refreshing Alternative Metal releases of 2025 thus far.
There is aggression, catchiness, and compelling lyrics about conquering the internal struggles many of us experience at some point in our lives. In truth, it is only a matter of time before LUNA KILLS makes an impact outside Finland and the surrounding European region onto the international circuit.
