All the clues are starting to reveal themselves in ABC’s series Once Upon a Time as season 6 marches on. In episode 1, The Savior, the audience was briefly introduced to Aladdin and Jafar, then, in episode 5, Strange Cases, Princess Jasmine appeared in Storybrooke going under the alias Shirin. Which leads to the most recent episode, Street Rats, which aired Sunday, October 23, 2016, where the untold story of Aladdin is finally introduced to viewers.
Tying in the past with the present, in Storybrooke, Emma learns through Jasmine there is in fact another Savior amongst them. That savior is Aladdin, and with the help of Regina and company, they look to find Aladdin’s whereabouts. Little do they know, Regina’s evil side has morph her appearance into Emma’s confidante, Archie, looking to squeeze Emma’s untold secret out without her suspecting a thing. Succeeding in doing so, Emma is forced to reveal her self-prophesied death to her family and Hook.
Flashing back to many years prior, in the capital of Agrabah, the audience is given more insight into the evil of Jafar and the power he has over the city and its people. Jasmine, looking to defeat Jafar, and help her father break free of his spell, finds Aladdin, a common street thief. Knowing there is something special about him, she pleads for his help, and with a little bit of reluctance, Aladdin agrees to do so. Along the way, Aladdin is tempted by Jafar to sever himself from the fate of being a Savior, a fate he informs Aladdin that does not have a happy ending. Tempted to do so, will Aladdin carry out his destiny to help Agrabah and his love interest Jasmine? That question raised, is Aladdin in fact still alive and is he hiding out somewhere in Storybrooke?
A diversion away from the main story of season 6, Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz do a fine job of tying it all together with the current story line. They finally reveal what Aladdin has to do with everything and how he could hold the key to Emma’s questions. Furthermore, the audience sees the true love Hook has for Emma, much like the one she showed for him in the previous season; which was spent mostly in the Underworld trying to rescue him. While not the most action filled episode this season, Street Rats served a purpose for the rest of the story that follows. More interesting tidbits of information should come with October 30th’s episode, entitled Deep Waters. That said, without giving too much away, fans should prepare for a voyage 20,000 leagues under the sea! Until then, CrypticRock gives Street Rats 3.5 out of 5 stars.
