Pretty Little Liars – Along Comes Mary (Season 7/ Episode 5 Review)

On July 12, 2016’s episode of Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars, someone has the homecoming of hell, and her relative might not be there to help her like she initially said. Marlene King stated that the audience would get new answers within every new episode, and on Tuesday July 19th’s new episode, entitled Along Comes Mary, King did not make an exception. Many familiar faces were brought back to the show and fans are already burning up social media with theories of why that is a big shock to everyone. One of the liars gets the proposal of a lifetime while another one cannot seem to find her special someone.

Alison is out of Welby under Mary Drake’s care, and she and Aria could not be more against it; Mary is not one to be trusted after finding out that she was working with Elliot the entire time. When Alison sees that all her money is gone, she demands Mary to tell her the truth about where all her money really is. Unexpectedly, Jenna knocks on Alison’s door and Ali makes a mistake that could ruin the strategic plan The Liars had made in order to wash their hands from Elliot’s murder. The girls find out that A.D. was not Elliot when Emily receives an email that has her in A.D.’s hands once again, and in order to find the truth she enlists Aria for help finding clues at Elliot’s last known location; what they find is unnerving, to say the least.

Emily and Aria figure out that Elliot was not trying to murder Alison the night he took her out of Welby, but Alison does not care about his reason whatsoever. At the apartment, Emily and Aria find various things belonging to a murderer; things like a fake Wilden’s head and a fake passport. Before they can gather enough evidence and leave, Toby knocks on the door, letting them know he is on to them, and demands an explanation, which they are more than inclined to give, minus the fact that they killed Elliot.

Spencer and Hanna are still not in the best position, but when Spencer cannot find Caleb, she asks Hanna where he could be, understanding that Hanna knows Caleb’s favorite places to be. Unfortunately, Spencer does not find him, but asks Toby for help, although Toby’s loyalty weights more in Caleb’s favor. At the police department, Spencer sees Marco Furey, aka the man he almost slept with before, and decides to lie about knowing him in an effort to avoid Caleb finding out about what almost happened in one of The Radley’s elevators. Back at the coffee shop, Emily is getting drinks when she realizes that Jenna is having a conversation with none other than Sarah Harvey! To add to the mystery, another player comes into the game as Noel Kahn joins Sarah and Jenna in what seems to be Rosewood’s new pack of villains.

Since five years passed and everyone is older now, fans have been getting plots that relate more to adults than to teens and no one seems to be complaining. This episode is one of the key episodes that is needed to tie in the entire season-opening new threats and new stories; Ezra proposing to Aria is one of them. Aria is unsure of the answer she may give Ezra after having answered a call from Nicole, Ezra’s long-lost girlfriend and thinking she may possibly be back for him. Next episode, airing on August 2nd entitled Wanted: Dead or Alive, is said to have been filmed simultaneously with Along Comes Mary for a reason, and also promises a death of a key character for being on the wrong team. If there is anything Pretty Little Liars has shown fans is that anything goes and no one is safe. CrypticRock gives Along Comes Mary 4.5 out of 5 stars.
