The element of surprise is lost in a world where technology reveals what is happening before it even occurs. People’s lives are on display, with each waking moment televised for ignorant commentary, knee-jerk reactions, and mob-ruled mentalities. It is an ugly world if we let it be, but thankfully, some appreciate the art of spontaneity and the excitement in life when we gift something unexpectedly. This is the case with the legendary Public Enemy, who came out of nowhere on Friday, June 27, 2025, with a brand new album called Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025.
Initially available exclusively via Bandcamp, Public Enemy decided to release the new album into the world without any premeditated promotion or hype, because sometimes the music and its message need to grow organically to reach the audience. Adding to it all, Public Enemy even offers a special ‘pay-what-you-want’ option for the first 72 hours of the release as a salute and ‘thank you’ to fans.
Rather unique and completely unexpected, the potential that new music from the band was not entirely outlandish, as on June 19, 2025 (in celebration of Juneteenth), they released a song entitled “March Madness.” Their first new track since the 2020 album What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down?, a little over a week later, eleven more songs emerged as part of Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025, on the same day that Public Enemy was scheduled to perform at the historic Royal Albert Hall in London.
All very classic Public Enemy moves; they are artists who have never shied away from making statements, raising societal questions, and marching to the beat of their own drum. Each attribute that has made them true music legends, who have produced some of Hip Hop’s most iconic records, like 1988’s It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, 1990’s Fear of a Black Planet, and 1991’s Apocalypse 91… The Enemy Strikes Black, and 1994’s Muse Sick-n-Hour Mess Age, with Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025, they add to the story.
Public Enemy’s first album in five years, Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025, also arrived just days before the band took to a European tour to play arenas and stadiums alongside Guns N’ Roses. Concert events for the history books, now Public Enemy return home to North America for more shows, which are scheduled throughout the rest of the year. Meanwhile, a CD and vinyl edition of Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025 is set for release on October 10, 2025.
Bring you up to snuff, it should also be noted that just a mere two months ago (on May 16th), Public Enemy’s own Chuck D released a separate album called Chuck D Presents Enemy Radio: Radio Armageddon. A whole lot of information to take in, now the real question is – where does Public Enemy go with Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025? Well, if you have followed them over the last forty years, it is clear that they are never going to go mainstream just to sell records. As usual, Public Enemy (led by Chuck D and Flavor Flav) hit you with equally heavy music and lyrical content.
Going right for the throat and never beating around the bush, songs like “Siick,” “Sexegenarian Vape,” and “Ageism” all strike a chord in the hearts of those who see right through all the noise. This is while “Fools Fools Fools” also pulls no punches with powerful lyrics that sit with you and stir in your head long after first consumption.
Overall, Public Enemy successfully creates yet another album with diverse beats, Rock-n-Roll and Soul textures, and stunning introspective concepts that remind you how effective the art form of Hip Hop can be. That is why Public Enemy’s Black Sky Over the Projects: Apartment 2025 is a masterful piece of work, with Cryptic Rock giving it 5 out of 5 stars.
