One of the most memorable R&B singing groups of the 1970s, The Stylistics had an elegance that was distinctly their own. Led by the sensational falsetto singing of Russell Thompkins Jr., some of their biggest hits include 1971’s “You Are Everything,” 1972’s “Betcha by Golly, Wow” and “I’m Stone in Love with You,” but also 1974’s “You Make Me Feel Brand New.” In total earning themselves 5 gold singles and 3 gold albums, and eligible for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame since 1997, it seems rather unfair they have not even been considered once for induction.

Nonetheless, The Stylistics’ worth to R&B and Soul music is not measured upon what one museum does, but on the lasting impression their music has left on listeners. This all considered, in 2024 Omnivore Records honors The Stylistics’ legacy with a reissue of their 1996 album Love Is Back In Style.

First released on Producer Preston Glass’ Marathon Records in 1996, Love Is Back In Style is an important album in the story of The Stylistics’ story to reflect on because it is in fact the last studio recording ever to feature three vital parts of The Stylistics; original members Russel Thompkins Jr, Airron Love and Herb Murell. Together they united in the studio to create some lovely songs that certainly were more modern than prior works of the ‘70s and ‘80s, but matched the magic of their classics.

This in mind, the production of Preston Glass is pristine, classic, and highly reminiscent of something the late, great Thom Bell (who also worked with likes of The Delfonics and James Ingram) may have done with The Stylistics during their peak years of commercial success. This is felt prevalent on songs like “I Once Had Love,” “Shoulder,” and “Have You Ever Been In Love.” However, in truth, the entire album oozes over with classic R&B vibes that shine bright.

Unfortunately, this album has not been available in a CD format in nearly thirty years, but on March 8th the aforementioned Omnivore Records offers it in a remastered format with fresh, new packaging. Sounding brighter, the remastering is fitting, and is matched with new liner notes from Kevin L. Goins; offering deeper insight to the history of the album. Beyond this, you also get a remixed edition of “She’s All That” featuring a rap verse.

Overall, The Stylistics are a group that are in essence timeless. Giving off positive vibes, Love Is Back In Style is an album that time should have not forgotten and thankfully Omnivore Records have brought it back to the forefront. So, if you had passed over the album for whatever reason, or simply have not heard it in ages, this is a perfect chance to reacquaint yourself and add this new physical format release to your collection. That is why Cryptic Rock gives the reissued edition of Love Is Back In Style 4.5 out of 5 stars.

  • The song on this album that most mirrors the 70’s recordings is “Where do you run”, great song. The others are far lees impressive. To add Rap to this recording is a sacrilege.

    • Thank you for taking the time to read the article Lonnie! We hope you enjoyed it. We agree that is a wonderful song. It is nice to see labels making the effort to releasing music on physical formats like this.
