The Vices – Before It Might Be Gone (Album Review)

The Vices 2025 band

There is no denying that the mental health of the world unraveled at the seams come global shutdowns in early 2020 due to COVID-19. One could say it was already in a fragile state, with isolation and disconnect only pushing it over the edge. In truth, we are all on the edge of sanity, where we often live in fear and self-doubt and are consumed by our past mistakes. As imperfect as we are, it is learning that while we cannot change the past, we can always forge a better tomorrow.

There is a lot to ponder in a world of confusion, and Dutch Alternative Rock band The Vices, in many ways, structure their existence around the struggle plaguing the human condition. Considering the self-reflected theme of their music, ironically, The Vices came together a year prior to the world-changing pandemic, only growing since that time. First emerging with the four-track EP Life Grows in September 2019, in March of 2021, they dished out the debut full-length album Looking For Faces, followed up by Unknown Affairs in March 2023.

Remaining steadily active and putting out a substantial amount of music in five years, now in 2025, they take the next step with the new album Before It Might Be Gone. Set for February 7, 2025, via +1 Records, the title of the record itself is quite ponderous. In short, it is an introspective thought that reminds us that nothing is forever and that we need to reconcile with ourselves or others sooner rather than later. All a part of personal growth, The Vices – consisting of Floris van Luijtelaar (vocals /guitar), Simon Bleeker (bass), Jonathan Kruizenga (guitar/keys), and Mathijs Louwsma (drums) – offer listeners their most captivating album yet with Before It Might Be Gone.

An album produced by Charlie Andrew (who has worked prominently with Alt-J), Before It Might Be Gone consists of eleven songs of simply irresistible melody, haunting harmony, and good old quality songwriting. Very much in the vein of their prior works, it seems as if the band is reaching a new level with music that combines Pop Rock, Alternative Rock, and Punk Rock. Very much something fans of British Rock and Britpop will adore, it is not a reach to say if you fancy acts like Oasis, The Editors, Blur, Foals, or Idlewild, you will also immediately be drawn in by The Vices.

Before It Might Be Gone possesses a keen ability to create a distinctive atmosphere with their music. Songs that will hook listeners include the title track, the recently released absolute must-listen single “How Does It Feel,” and “Hope You Know,” where the guitars and keyboards intertwine magically with leading and backing harmonizing vocals.
All mentioned very ethereal-sounding Rock songs, but there are also more upbeat moments with driving beats, as heard on “Gold,” “Guess We’re All The Same,” and “Wrong Ones.” Each is a very good diversion, but you also cannot overlook the melancholic undertone of “Lovers Eyes” and stripped-back “Piano Song.”

If you are new to The Vices and long for Alternative Rock with musical and lyrical depth, be prepared to be completely enthralled. Moreover, if you are in the US market, there is a limited opportunity to catch them live when they play select shows on the East Coast, Midwest, and West Coast between February 19th and 27th. Highly recommended to check out; it is also urged to give Before It Might Be Gone because Cryptic Rock gives the album 4.5 out of 5 stars.
