Miss Meadows (Movie Review)

From Writer/Director Karen Leigh Hopkins (Stepmom 1998, Because I Said So 2007) comes the Drama/Thriller film entitled Miss Meadows. Quite a different type of story, it defies expectations by giving audiences a character who is not at all what she appears to be. Making her return, following a long hiatus, is Katie Holmes (Phone Booth 2002, Batman Begins 2005) as Miss Meadows joined by James Badge Dale (The Departed 2006, World War Z 2013) as The Sheriff, and Callan Mulvey (Captain America: The Winter Soldier 2014, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 2016) as Skyler. Not rated, Miss Meadows premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 21, 2014, and, on November 14th of that same year, received a limited theatrical release. Now available on DVD/VOD since January 27, 2015, Miss Meadows is a Black Comedy still picking up some momentum a year later.

Due to a tragedy she suffered when she was a little girl, Miss Meadows took it upon herself to never fear criminals and to always right wrongs. That same life tragedy is to blame for Miss Meadows’ pristine lifestyle as a substitute teacher who doubles as a vigilante that gets rid of bad guys. Miss Meadows also has the need to be overly compulsive and organized, which makes any little blood stain a problem for her and she tries to fix the problem before it gets worse. One sunny afternoon, Miss Meadows is stopped by the town’s Sheriff, and ever since then, the two have been smitten with each other.

Miss Meadows gets alerted that several prison inmates have been released due to overpopulation, and that makes her even more alert. Skylar, an alleged criminal, moves into the community and this puts Miss Meadows and her neighbors in a frantic mood. Several events occur that leads Miss Meadows to make mistakes, and the Sheriff knows about it. His true love and the fact that there is a baby on the way makes him forgive her, but only if she promises to stop what she is doing.

The audience learns of a mystery involving Miss Meadows, her mother, and a telephone Furthermore, the promise that Miss Meadows made to the Sheriff is put to the test after Skylar kidnaps one of Miss Meadows’ students, forcing her to act quickly. In this Vigilante vs.Villain intricate storyline, only some will survive, changing everyone’s lives forever.

Known for roles that do not require a lot of action, Holmes is challenged with this film, opting to play Miss Meadows, and it worked. Nobody realized how Miss Meadows was going to be like until the audience saw the movie and to their surprise, the movie worked greatly. Not one of the 88 minutes of run time were dull and every scene built hype to see which ending was the main character going to have.

Miss Meadows played with people’s minds with a minor twist that nobody expected, and it was just another positive thing the Drama gave. The exposition, the conflict, the climax, and the resolution of this story were executed really well, and everything seems to fall into place. Suffice to say, this is by far one of the best works Karen Leigh Hopkins has ever done. CrypticRock gives Miss Meadows 4 out of 5 stars.
