Based on the Lewis Carrols’ 1865 epic adventure Alice in Wonderland comes a reimagining made for Horror fans everywhere, Alice in Terrorland. Written and directed by independent Filmmaker Richard John Taylor (Vengeance 2020, The Huntress of Auschwitz 2022), Alice in Terrorland arrived for streaming digitally and available for purchase on DVD through the UK-based company High Fliers Films as of February 13, 2024.
A compelling project to look into if you are a fan of Alice in Wonderland, Taylor’s film starring Rula Lenska (Royal Flash 1975, Queen Kong 1976) as Grandmother Beth, Jon-Paul Gates (Haunting 2013, The Howling 2017) as The Mad Hatter, Steve Wraith (Interview with a Hit Man 2012, Give Them Wings 2021) as The Rabbit, and Lizzy Willis (The Picture of Dorian Gray 2023) as Alice. In all, a cunning re-telling, this modern story follows of a grieving daughter (Alice) who has lost her parents in a house fire and goes to live with her grandmother. Thinking that she is safe around family, she soon discovers that there is more to her grandmother than just pure intentions. Her stay soon turns into a tale of deceit and torturous thrills as she tries to escape the clutches of her grandmother’s dark and twisted world.
Beginning slowly, much like the original tale, Alice in Terrorland shows poor Alice become entangled in a tale of imagination and chaos. Though this story is a lot more vengeful and menacing. This in mind, every actor and actress do a superb job in capturing the character’s grim essence. This starts with the talented Lizzy Willis; who does an amazing job portraying the young, naïve Alice. There is also Rula Lenska as her grandmother, and she dominates the screen as a demented, yet bewitching character. Lastly, Jon-Paul Gates as The Mad Hatter looks as minacious as one would think that he would in a utopia full of dark imagination.
Furthermore, with Richard John Taylor sitting in the director’s chair, it is no surprise that this epic Thriller is really quite captivating. As mentioned, an indie director, Taylor has done a lot in recent years, and is no stranger to the genre; previously working on such films as 2020’s Vengeance and 2022’s The Haunting of Pendle Hill.
Overall, Alice in Terrorland is a tastefully done film with a gripping story and talented cast. So, if you want something to scare and lead you down a rabbit hole full of fright, imagination and terror… this would be the film for you. That is why Cryptic Rock gives Alice in Terrorland 5 out of 5 stars.
