There are some collaborations in music that work, and there are those which do not. A real game of Russian Roulette, one of the more recent collaborations – consisting of Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns) and Todd Kerns (Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators) – falls into the bracket of something that clicks well.
Apparently, something that Guns and Kerns had been talking about doing now for a decade, having busy schedules with their other projects, the timing was finally right to come together to make it happen. Doing that, they put together a band they call Blackbird Angels… and it is a little bit different than what you may know them for in the past. Guns, the signature guitarist of L.A. Guns has done some great work through the years as a part of the Guns, as well as other places, but nothing really like what we hear here. This is while Kerns, who has been known as the bassist for Slash featuring Myles Kennedy & the Conspirators on each of their tours and albums they have done, takes centerstage as vocalist for Blackbird Angels.
So, what exactly does Blackbird Angels sound like? Well, the answer is in their debut album Solsorte which was released on September 8, 2023 through Frontiers Music SRL. Produced by Guns, the album finds him, Kerns, and Drummer Adam Hamilton (who has worked with L.A. Guns for many years now) putting together a very retro sounding Rock-n-Roll record. Ten tracks in total, it feels more like something that was written and recorded during the ’70s than anything else. Driven by heavily grooved guitars, powerful vocals from Kerns, and song structures that fit more into what is now called Classic Rock’s realm, there are some really cool moments inside of Solsorte.
Really something that is album-oriented, a few tracks that will immediately stick in your claw are “Shut Up (You Know I Love You),” “Worth the Wait,” and “Coming In Hot.” This is while others like “Only Everything” keep you rocking before more mellow delights such as “Better Than This” and “The Last song.”
In all, Solsorte is a Rock-n-Roll album that will appeal to fans of Heavy Rock that includes Led Zeppelin from back in the day, or even newer vintage styled bands that include Rival Sons. Really interesting to hear and worth the time to check out, Cryptic Rock gives the debut album from Blackbird Angels 4 out of 5 stars.
