One of Classic Rock’s most recognized names, Glenn Hughes is often associated with his time in Deep Purple between 1973 and 1976, where he recorded with them for 1974’s Burn and Stormbringer, as well as 1975’s Come Taste The Band. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Deep Purple in 2016, there is still so much more to this exceptional vocalist and bassist.
Also working with Gary Moore on his 1985 album Run for Cover, Hughes was also a part of Black Sabbath for their 1986 album Seventh Star. However, this is not all, as in more modern times, he fronted California Breed between 2013 and 2015 (which featured Jason Bonham), The Dead Daisies between 2019 and 2023, and has also been a significant part of Black Country Communion with Joe Bonamassa since the band formed in 2009.
All awe-inspiring aspects of Hughes’ resume, he has also had his share of solo releases, and now he makes a powerful return with Chosen, his first solo album in nearly ten years. Released on September 5, 2025, via Frontiers Music s.r.l., Chosen marks a significant chapter in Hughes’ storied career, blending Hard Rock and Soul with a deeply personal and introspective edge that is not a mainstay of the current music industry.
Produced alongside longtime collaborator Søren Andersen, the album features a tight, talented lineup including Hughes himself on vocals and bass, Andersen on guitar, Ash Sheehan on drums, and Bob Fridzema on keyboards. Hughes describes Chosen as ‘soul food,’ focusing on themes of love, hope, faith, and acceptance. He explains that his songwriting process is centered on inner feelings rather than external events, emphasizing that music serves as a healing force in his life.
The opening track, “Voice In My Head,” immediately pulls you into the internal dialogues that shape our subconscious minds and subsequently our daily lives. Its introspective lyrics, combined with an intense, emotive arrangement, set the tone for the album’s journey. “My Alibi” follows with a compelling exploration of guilt and redemption, showcasing Hughes’s ability to balance rhythmically engaging music with emotionally charged vocal performances.
The title track, “Chosen,” stands out as a declaration of self-respect and acceptance, along with the recognition of one’s greater purpose. Its soaring, inspirational melody and heartfelt lyrics reinforce the album’s core message of embracing who you are and progressing forward with hope. The album closes with “Into The Fade,” a more melancholic and reflective piece that contemplates the passage of time and the inevitable fading into obscurity. This thoughtful conclusion invites listeners to ponder life’s fleeting moments while appreciating the present.
As we know, Glenn Hughes’ career has been marked by constant evolution and collaboration. Over the decades, Hughes has continued to explore various musical landscapes. That being said, Chosen is a testament to his enduring artistry and willingness to evolve. It blends soulful melodies, introspective lyrics, and dynamic performances, offering both longtime fans and newcomers an intimate glimpse into the heart and soul of one of Rock music’s most respected and passionate figures.
With this Chosen, Hughes reaffirms his place not only as a legendary musician but as a profound storyteller and emotional conduit through his music. One of the first must-listen Rock albums of fall 2025, Cryptic Rock gives Chosen 4.5 out of 5 stars.
