In Our Blood (Movie Review)

Utopia, the company behind many critically acclaimed independent films, is poised to bare its needle-sharp fangs in anticipation of In Our Blood. The coffin lid is flung wide open with Herculean force on October 24, 2025, when the film premiered nationwide in theaters.

Some might say – seriously, another vampire movie? Before rushing to judgment, In Our Blood is much more than that – it is Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker Pedro Kos’s first directorial narrative feature! The originality and composition of the film have made it a perfect candidate for exclusive screenings at select locales, most notably at the Santa Fe International Film Festival. The eye-catching cinematography interlocks seamlessly with the musical score, laying the bedrock for a spine-tingling Thriller.

Knowing this, some might also ask – what makes this vampire movie uniquely different from the others? Well, it veers away from the traditional cinematic portrayal of a vampire in the midst of an unrequited feeding frenzy or combusting in a burst of solar-ignited ashes. What bubbles to the surface of consciousness is a realization that perception is the first deception. The kicker plot twist here is that the carefully constructed reality being relayed to the visual and auditory cortexes is merely a smokescreen for a nefarious covert operation.

As the story unfurls at seemingly breakneck speed, the mask of illusion is abruptly ripped off, like a band-aid stuck to hair. There is a mind-blowing revelation at the end that overwhelms the nervous system with disbelief so intense it drops jaws without warning. At the same time, a release from a thundercloud of betrayal extinguishes the flame of empathy.

Furthermore, the character development of Emily Wyland (Brittany O’Grady: Stars series, Black Christmas 2019), a filmmaker, is brilliantly designed and executed. The illusion of a tormented soul seeking reconciliation with an estranged parent was dashed against an obsidian rock face, revealing the quintessence. O’Grady created an endearing persona with childhood trauma baggage that made one feel instinctively empathetic and protective towards her.

A series of events showed her courage and tenacity in getting to the root of the matter at whatever cost. She boldly dons the trench coat of a private investigator with a magnifying glass in hand. One can almost hear the collective shout, “No, Emily, don’t go!” The notion of  ‘opposite attracts’ precisely defined the relationship between Emily and her partner, Danny (E.J. Bonilla: Guiding Light series, Four 2012), a cinematographer. He peppers her with questions, and her responses are bite-sized morsels of information for digestion.

After a cold-water bucket realization that you were duped by someone you rooted for, one is face-to-face with a zoomed-in image of a human version of Emily in the throes of anguish and remorse for what she has done. Clarity is gained as the realization sets in that this is the exact scene laid out at the beginning, quickly retracted from view as a film strip rewind. This was a great camera technique that ensnared attention like the silken threads of a web. She is faced with the reality that she has single-handedly annihilated all those close to her, and she stands alone, battling with her shred of humanity.

The themes of greed and dysfunctional family dynamics are also realistically portrayed within In Our Blood. Heck, if it were not for the insatiable appetite for human blood, there would not be a story. You cannot get fat from drinking blood, but you can certainly leave behind a high body count in your wake. Familial dynamics can be challenging to navigate and feel like heavy emotional burdens. This is undoubtedly an area that many can relate to. The aerial views and side shots give the viewer a sense of the exotic beauty and mystery of Los Cruces. Despite the feeling of isolation, the view intrigues.

Overall, In Our Blood is definitely one to add to the vampire section of the library, as it will create a craving for repeat views. You will enjoy the deceptive nature of the story, and it reinforces the belief that one should never assume that the truth is before you. A brilliant, outside-the-box story about modern vampires with surgical precision, slicing through traditional vampire lore and grafting on a realistic vision, Cryptic Rock gives In Our Blood 5 out of 5 stars.
