Jason Bourne (Movie Review)

Created by American author Robert Ludlum, The Bourne Identity book series follows a man who suffers from retrograde amnesia and must find out who he is and why certain things are happening to him. Debuting in a film format in 2002 with the release of The Bourne Identity, it followed Ludlum’s second book in 2004 with the release of The Bourne Supremacy, a story that continued his journey to find out unanswered questions, leaving him exposed just when he thought he was free from all of his troubles. Ludlum’s third book, The Bourne Ultimatum, was theatrically released in 2007, finally giving the character the answers he was looking for of how everything started.

The story picks up where Jason Bourne (Matt Damon: Good Will Hunting 1997, Interstellar 2014) finally disappears after he was exposed from operation Blackbriar. He isolates himself from the world, because knowing what he is capable of in being an assassin, disappearing left and right leaving marks without a trace. One of the hacktivist group, Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles: Save The Last Dance 2001, Closed Circuit 2013), hacks into the CIA database to expose all the black ops programs. In the process, she finds hidden documents that concern Jason Bourne’s recruitment into Treadstone and his father’s role in that program. She downloads the files onto a USB and finds Bourne to inform him. This traces back to Heather Lee (Alicia Vikander: Burnt 2015, The Man From U.N.C.L.E 2015), head of the CIA division, and CIA Director Robert Dewey (Tommy Lee Jones: The Fugitive 1993, Men In Black series).

Bourne and Parsons finally meet in Greece where they are in the middle of an antigovernment protest. Dewey sends an ex- Blackbriar assassin Asset (Vincent Cassel:Trance 2013, Partisan 2015) to kill Bourne. Asset has been holding a grudge and seeks revenge to Bourne after he himself was captured and tortured following a Blackbriar leak. Parsons is shot during a high speed chase and right before she dies, she gives Bourne the key to a locker that holds the USB drive which contains the CIA files on him. He finally reaches the locker and reads the drive and learns that his father, Robert Webb, was an analyst for the CIA and was involved in the original creation of Treadstone program. Lee, who has been tracking Bourne down, believes she can persuade him to come in and return to the agency. Revealing more information on the drive, Bourne finds out about Malcolm Smith, a former Treadstone surveillance operative who tracked him down for recruitment.

Threatening Smith’s life from a high roof top, Smith reveals that Richard Webb created the program but tried to prevent the agency in recruiting Bourne. Dewey authorized the killing of Webb and staged his death as a terrorist attack to persuade Bourne to join Treadstone. In the crossfire that Dewey authorized, Bourne meets Lee and works together due to the fact that Lee does not agree with Dewey’s methods and directs Bourne to a convention in Las Vegas to get answers.
Bourne chases down Dewey and confronts him in his suite, Dewey’s right-hand man shows up and shoots Bourne but dies as Bourne shoots him as well. Lee runs in and kills Dewey before he can shoot Bourne. Bourne covers up Lee’s involvement before giving chase to the Asset and finally kills him in a sewer.

Lee convinces Edwin Russell (Scott Shepherd: Ithaca 2015, Bridge of Spies 2015) the Director of Central of National Intelligence that she should be Dewey’s replacement as director and plans to have Bourne join the agency, but recognizes the need to kill him if he refuses. Lee approaches Bourne and tries to convince him, but as Bourne decides to consider, Lee gets back in her car and finds a tape recording from Bourne that is the conversation she just had with Edwin revealing that Bourne does not trust her.

Answering the question if Jason Bourne lives up to expectations, this action packed movie has brought satisfaction to summer viewers. A film for all types of audiences, it is by far the best Action film of the summer, perhaps 2016. It goes over the top, it is fun, and will give audiences a thrill.
