Snoop Dogg is one of the most iconic hip hop artists of the past three decades. Discovered in 1992 by Dr. Dre, Snoop has gone on to a colorful music and acting career in which he has sold over thirty million records worldwide. After an inspiring experience back in 2012 visiting Jamaica, Snoop now takes on a new avenue of musical expression going by the alias Snoop Lion. On Tuesday July 8th he brought the history of his discography to one of Long Island’s hottest venues, The Space at Westbury, in New York.
Warming up the stage prior to Snoop’s appearance was a series of DJs by the names of No Wahala DJs (DJ Chibuikem & DJ Quesqueces) and DJ Shakey. The three young aspiring DJs spun reggae, reggaeton, as well as old school hip hop. As fans anxiously awaited Snoop to take the stage; it was a marvel to see the age and cultural diversity around. Packed with music lovers from all walks of life, many grew up listening to Snoop and this was their first opportunity to ever see him perform live. For that reason the tension was so thick in The Space that chants of “We Want Snoop” could be heard for the better part of a half hour prior to his arrival on stage.
Pumped up even more by Snoop’s Hype Man, the rapper received massive fanfare when he finally walked out. Rapping his way through the set, lyrically smooth, on the microphone as the wave of tension let loose in The Space and the audience was in the groove. Pumping out newer tunes like “Here Comes The King” and old classics like “Tha Shiznit”, Snoop had command over every moment of his performance. Paying homage to the past with even flow, many surprises graced the set list including the Dr. Dre tunes “The Next Episode” and “Nuthin’ but a “G” Thang”. It was like being transported back into the golden age of the laid back attitude of west coast hip hop that could not help but make everyone smile.
Keeping the hits coming, the bass was extremely thick sending vibrations through the floor as Snoop rattled out tracks like “Ain’t No Fun (If the Homies Can’t Have None)”, “Gin & Juice”, and “Lodi Dodi”. Showing immense love for his fans, Snoop engaged all making eye contact and showing a pleasant, humble attitude. That type of relaxed vibe made the atmosphere that much more fun for fans and many could be seen with their cell phones in the air or simply singing along with the music Snoop unleashed. Moving into more party igniting tracks, Snoop rattled out “Drop It Like It’s Hot”, the legendary tune “Who Am I? (What’s My Name?)”, and the Bruno Mars/Wiz Khalifa collaboration hit “Young, Wild & Free”.
Snoop Dogg, AKA Snoop Lion, proved he is still a king of hip hop with this performance. The experience was something fans will hold on to for their rest of their lives. He knew exactly how to keep the audience on their feet and excited all night long while being on point with his delivery.
