Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (Documentary Review)

Back in 1984, a band out of the suburban town of Sayerville, New Jersey, was set to make a massive impact. An unlikely place to find the next big Rock-n-Roll band, these guys had a hungry determination and the talent to rise to the top. Who were they? None other than Bon Jovi, of course!

Led by Jon Bon Jovi, who had been working at the Manhattan Recording Studio Power Station, he and his band of Richie Sambora (guitars/vocals), Alec John Such (bass), Tico Torres (drums), and David Bryan (keyboards) willed themselves to the top. Releasing the self-titled debut album in 1984, it featured the popular hit “Runaway,” which peaked at number 39 on the Billboard 100. It was a great start; this was only the beginning because Bon Jovi would go on to have four number-one singles and six number-one albums, selling over 130 million albums altogether.

Factors that rank Bon Jovi as one of the most successful Rock-n-Roll bands of all time mean they celebrate their achievements in many different ways in 2024. Breaking it all down, there is an official signed/numbered limited edition book called Bon Jovi Forever (which was limited to 1,500 copies through Genesis Publications which set it arrive in December 2025, plus the more attainable hardback bookstore edition out on September 23, 2025), the Bon Jovi Forever exhibit which opened at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on June 8th, plus limited-edition ruby color vinyl LP reissue (released on March 24th) and limited-edition cassette (released April 5th) of the debut Bon Jovi album. Beyond this, they also released their brand new studio album Forever on June 7th to critical acclaim. It is an album that finds Bon Jovi rocking hard and heavy but also digging deep into mature introspection. Essentially, as their sixteenth overall studio album, it is a must-listen.

Amidst all of these celebratory moments, there is also the release of the documentary series Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story. Acquired for distribution by Hulu in early 2024, it arrived on the streaming services as a four-part docu-series on April 26, 2024, as one of the most comprehensive artist retrospectives out there today.

Directed by Gotham Chopra, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story was captured over many months of video-recorded interviews with Jon Bon Jovi, Sambora, Torres, Rashbaum, Hugh McDonald, Phil X, John Shanks, Everett Bradley, plus others, like Jon’s wife, Dorothea, and former band manager, Doc McGhie. Unfortunately, Alec John Such was omitted, and he then tragically passed away in June of 2022. With all this in mind, each interview is introspective, thoughtful, and honest. You get candid takes from each member of the band that showcase their individuality, as well as how important the collective of Bon Jovi is to each of them.

Apparently, it is clear that each of these guys has love, respect, and admiration for one another; each conversation is imperative to the makeup of the documentary. However, it cannot be ignored that when the film gets into the last decade or so of the band, when Sambora bowed out, it gets a bit emotional. It is difficult to put into words how each member feels; even Sambora himself appears to be choked up, but he inevitably does not regret leaving Bon Jovi, and you have to respect his redirected dedication to his family.

In addition to the newly captured interviews, there are plenty of archival interviews, concert footage, and promotional material from the last forty years of Bon Jovi, as well as some other aspects. A bit of a twist into the documentary itself, you also get to see an up close and personal look at Jon Bon Jovi’s struggles with his voice, the endless hours of work he puts into trying to be on point, leading to his risky surgery in the summer of 2022.

A very gut-wrenching period of his life; you can feel how determined he is to keep doing what he loves. Admirable, Jon Bon Jovi shows that his love for music is undying and that he refuses to just give up. With that, you can also see how this attitude helped the band navigate rough waters in the early stages of their career and how the bonds between the members grew through adversity.

Overall, Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story is a massive five-hour documentary that turns over every stone in the history of the band. Some may say it is a bit too long, but for those who have followed Bon Jovi since the beginning, it is perfectly orchestrated with equal devotion to each era of the band. It does not shy away from uncomfortable moments (like Sambora’s departure or the firing of Doc McGhee) and even gives you a peek into unreleased songs like “Cadillac Man, “but it also beams a hopeful message that we can all find the light even in darkness. A must-watch for Bon Jovi and Rock-n-Roll lovers, Cryptic Rock gives Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story 4.5 out of 5 stars.
