The Christmas Ring (Movie Review)

In times where it feels like human connection has been stifled, there are still stories being written that capture the spirit of life. Uplifting, and hopefully, American Novelist Karen Kingsbury is one such individual who has focused on such emotions in her writings through the years. Initially a journalist, Kingsbury soon turned to creative writing, having written or co-written numerous novels, many of which have become New York Times and USA Today best sellers. Writing from her heart about family, love, and overcoming, many of Kingsbury’s stories have even been adapted into feature films featured on The Hallmark Channel. At the same time, her Baxter Family series was developed into a Prime Video series in 2024.

A very accomplished woman spreading positive vibes, Kingsbury now brings audiences a new Christmas-themed tale called The Christmas Ring. Initially released as a novel on October 21, 2025, and quickly becoming a bestseller, the film adaptation swiftly arrived in movie theaters on November 6, 2025, through Fathom Entertainment. Perfectly timed for the holiday season, the screenplay was crafted by Kingsbury herself along with Tyler Russell, who also acts as director. Having worked together on other film projects, they capture a story that keeps you engaged from start to finish while also delving deeply into human emotion.

A film which features a recognizable and talented cast, you have leads including Jane Kramer (known for series such as One Tree Hill and Friday Night Lights), Benjamin Hollingsworth (known for the hit Netflix series Virgin River), Megan Ashley Brown (a rising star with credits including 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), and six-time Emmy-award winning Kelsey Grammer. This leading group comes together to create very human characters that you can relate to as they navigate love, loss, and sustained selfless actions.

Providing a peek into the world of The Christmas Ring, the story is set in a military town and follows Vanessa Mayfield (Jane Kramer), a young widow who tragically lost her husband in service. Still grieving, she is also searching for a beloved family ring that goes back to World War II, where her great-grandfather found it as a ray of hope while in service, within the dirt in Normandy on D-Day. Putting out flyers in hopes of recovering the ring, she crosses paths with the father-and-son antique store owners, Ben Miller (Benjamin Hollingsworth) and his father, Howard Miller (Kelsey Grammer). Unexpectedly, Vanessa soon finds a connection with Ben, hoping her daughter, Sadie (Megan Ashley Brown), returning home from college for Christmas, will accept the relationship, all while holding out hope of locating the ring.

A story filled with romance, the heartbreak of letting go, and the power of kindness, The Christmas Ring is a movie that will have you running the gamut of emotions. Is there a sense of fantasy involved? Yes, but the mystical aspect is part of it, because miracles do happen every day, all around us, if we stop to pay attention. With that said, The Christmas Ring seems perfectly fitting as a film for the Hallmark Channel, so those who enjoy heartwarming, family-friendly stories will find it right up their alley. Those who are a bit more jaded and cynical, try to lower your guard and let your heart be softened.

Even more interesting, while The Christmas Ring had a limited theatrical run, it grossed a sustainable amount at the box office before becoming available to rent or buy digitally on November 28th, and then hitting DVD (Pinnacle Peak Pictures and Alliance Home) on December 9th. Furthermore, with a keen focus on military service men and women, the film reportedly features nearly 100 active-duty and veteran background actors (including a 101-year-old WWII veteran, James Daniels), and it is aligned with the Gary Sinise Foundation (which champions helping veterans).

So, if you are looking for a lovely Christmas movie with great performances, delightful writing, and a soul-soothing sensation, do not miss The Christmas Ring, because Cryptic Rock gives it 4.5 out of 5 stars.
