As the seasonal spinner lands in the fall quadrant, we note a distinct chill in the air whilst the trees rapidly molt into the vibrant hues of autumnal foliage. Amidst the change in landscape lies the unique opportunity to discover outstanding bands that are diligently putting out albums that put a ‘spring in one’s mindset.’ One such would have to be The Dead Daisies; a band established back in 2012 by a list of well-known performers.
Looking deeper inside the history of it all, the name Dead Daisies was conceptualized by co-founder Jon Stevens and is derived from a Mexican tradition the Day of the Dead. Comprised of a group of rotating seasoned musicians, their primary objective was to send the world a poignant message that Rock-n-Roll is still alive. A bold undertaking, but the payoff has been astounding as it is tangibly seen with their latest studio album Light ‘Em Up. Produced by Marti Frederiksen, it was released on September 6, 2024, the same day their world tour kicked off.
Exciting times for the band and their fans, The Dead Daisies are making appearances now through the end of November. With that considered, Light ‘Em Up is available now in a CD and vinyl format, but also through all streaming platforms. Their seventh overall studio album, the current lineup is rather outstanding; consisting of original Guitarist David Lowy, Guitarist Doug Aldrich (known for working with Whitesnake, and Dio, among others), Drummer Tommy Clufetos (famous for his work with Ozzy Osbourne, and more), Vocalist John Corabi (one-time Mötley Crüe member), and newest addition, Bassist Michael Devin (who spent over a decade with Whitesnake).
With this all in mind, Light ‘Em Up is a colorful tapestry of the Hard Rock melodies of ’70s and ’80s stylings. The album showcases ten musical soundtracks that synchronize a volatile burst charge ignition which sets off a fulgurant fireworks display directly behind the retinal curtain of the eye. Not only does the music have a familiar feel to Rock-n-Roll fans, but it is distinct from those who came before, and the lyrics are without question relatable to many.
A lot to take in, but there are a handful of tracks that stand out in a musical neon glow and resonate on a personal level. Many will feel the steely magnetic pull of the guitar riffs. This is while the vagary of the melodies within the tracks quickens the heartbeat with excitement. For example, “Light ‘Em Up” is a Rock anthem that intros with a prolonged guitar twang, but then springs into frenetic activity with an interplay of loud steely guitar riffs, matched with John Corabi’s vibrant raspy vocals. Then there is “I Wanna Be Your Bitch,” where there is a mind-swirling guitar riff that caffeinates the nervous system with a head-twirling beat and catchy chorus. This is one to chase away those morning blues as you are getting ready to leave for work, inevitably beating your steering wheel as you buck traffic. On the other hand, “Times are Changing” is an upbeat piece with some interesting guitar play coupled with some bold screaming vocals that relay the PSA that one keeps up or be left behind. A motivational piece, in these volatile and chaotic times… it is a welcome breath of fresh air.
Audience engagement is a critical element in the success of any musical endeavor. However, The Dead Daisies nails it with gut-wrenching and raw energy instrumentals. Light ‘Em Up is a compilation of unmistakable Heavy Metal sounds that leaps, pauses, and encircles your mind’s eye like kaleidoscopic images. An album that is a fresh take on vintage Rock-n-Roll, it will have strong appeal to those who love KISS, Whitesnake, Foreigner, and Aerosmith. That is why Cryptic Rock gives the impressive Light ‘Em Up 5 out of 5 stars.
