Creepshow in 4K

Creepshow (Collector’s Edition 4K UHD + Blu-Ray Review)

Creepshow - Father's Day Cake

To many 80’s Horror film fans, 1982’s Creepshow is the ultimate party. A unification of beloved Director George A. Romero and Writer Stephen King working together, the film highlights everything any fan of the era could ask for. King, who actually made his screenwriting debut with Creepshow, worked magically with Romero, who at this point in time had already left massive impressions in Horror with 1968’s Night of the Living Dead,  1978’s Dawn of the Dead, as well as 1985’s Day of the Dead

As a team, they put together a Horror anthology film in vain of 1972 of 1972’s Tales from the Crypt or 1973’s The Vault of Horror. However, King and Romero added a twist of Comedy, while paying homage to the EC Horror Comics of the 1950s into the mix. Upping the excitement, they utilize the talents of an all-star cast that includes Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Fritz Weaver, Leslie Nielsen, Carrie Nye, E. G. Marshall, Viveca Lindfors, and a young Ted Danson… just to name a few.

Really leaving little to dislike, Creepshow still remains one of the best Horror films of the ‘80s. In fact, it is still relevant; being a part of the modern Horror world with the Shudder Creepshow series running from 2019 to present. So, it seems only just, like other old fan-favorites, the Creepshow received the 4K treatment. Answering the call, Scream Factory did just that with the release of the Collector’s Edition 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray combo pack on June 20, 2023.

A true must have for Creepshow fans, the set comes with a nice slipcover featuring the original theatrical art, but also a reversible art wrap featuring alternative art on the other side. These being the cosmetic features, inside the packaging you get an absolutely stunning 4K transfer of the film. Restored with care, the colors are more vivid than ever before, while the imagery is sharper and brighter than before. That means you get to see Fluffy in all his glory… and he still looks fantastic! And if you are concerned that modern technology will cause the film to lose its aesthetic, fear not, because the atmosphere is still just as plausible.

All this outlined, the extra features on the Blu-ray disc of the set truly trump anything any prior Creepshow physical format release has ever offered before. This includes audio commentaries, roundtable discussions, more interviews, a look into the restoration of the film, plus a bunch more. And for those who want to really invest, Scream Factory also has an absolutely stunning limited to 500 copies set available that includes exclusive poster, exclusive slipcover, a prism sticker, an enamel pin set, and lobby cards. Perhaps the only version of Creepshow you will ever need for your collection, and perfect to pick up for Halloween, or as a Christmas gift for a Horror fan, Cryptic Rock gives Scream Factory’s Collector’s Edition set 5 out of 5 stars.
