From a bird’s eye view, you can find talented unique bands in all corners of the planet. A case of seek and you shall find, it is all the more exciting when we discover one that feels like something special. This is the case with an up-and-coming Canadian act called Absolight.
Out of Nicolet, one of the oldest towns in the French-speaking province of Quebec, these guys initially came together a couple of years ago under the name In Foes. From here developing song concepts and recording them to tape, they have since morphed into Absolight.
Unique to many other Modern Rock bands around today, the trio of twin brothers Olivier Ricard (vocals/guitar) and Carl Ricard (bass), along with Antony Jomphe (drums), stick to writing thoughtful compositions free of gimmicks and current trends. Relying on talent and not trying to fit an algorithm of what will appeal to the fragmented attention span of a TikTok user, their songs are built in layers with carefully plotted textures.
Laying somewhere in between Alternative Rock you may have heard in the late ‘90s and early 2000s and Progressive Heavy Rock coming out of the European region, there are shades of Muse, and Placebo, among others here. Still very green, they recently released their debut single “You Are Right” on November 15, 2024. A great way to grab people’s attention, it is a prelude to a planned full-length album sometime in late 2025. Currently building momentum, this debut single is full of upbeat Punk-inspired guitar energy and powerful lyrics singing of Olivier exemplified by the line –
“Yes, Everybody’s Obsessed With Being Right!”
Fitting for a modern world where most live in an echo chamber of their own worldview, “You Are Right” is a song that reminds us that to move forward we need to stop being so self-righteous. Something we should all think about, it would also behoove anyone who enjoys Alternative Rock which is not a generic photocopy to check out Absolight.
