The blood does not just thicken in this week’s new episode of Pretty Little Liars, it solidifies! On February the 2nd, Freeform delivered a brand new episode, titled New Guys, New Lies. This title could not be more suitable to the episode. We learned so much more and, of course, got more questions because of what we learned.
Let’s start with the obvious. Ezra, Alison, Melissa, and Lucas are all out of town conveniently for some unknown reason. They just happen to not be near the Liars when they all of a sudden get a text message from the new Big Bad. Hanna’s guilt intensifies and thus makes an executive decision to tell the truth. She does, though she is not ready to share everything she knows. Like mother, like daughter, Ashley once again helps Hanna by stealing the back-up footage from the footage farm herself. Somehow, the thriller keeps on taking us back to its roots. When mentioned the title was very fitting to this episode, it is because Spencer has now officially professed her interest to Caleb, and viewers meet Toby’s new girlfriend too. When Caleb told Toby about Spencer, the viewers could not get over Toby’s face.
Aria and Emily create a plan of their own and set to find out if the golf club “A” sent them in the picture text is in fact Ezra’s club. When Aria sneaks into Ezra’s apartment, she finds out the club is still there and relief immediately sets in. Emily’s new found friend is quickly taken aback when she finds out Emily just used her to help Aria out. In this scene, we see Aria using a manipulative reason to make Emily help her. Aria cannot be the new “A” because when Hanna replied to the threatening text, someone replied back and Aria was there with them all. This does not rule the possibility out since she could just have a helper out there somewhere.
New “A” graduated from using all letters in the texts to using letters and emojis now; albeit he is a New “A,” not the same one from before. If we learned anything from the last five minutes of that last episode’s scene is that the new Big Bad is not going to play around this time, he is in it for the kill. He threw away the old black hoodie Cece used to wear and searched for uniforms online. He made it clear that he is hiding in plain sight. Throughout the episode, fans see an old man lurking around at various times and places. We did not think anything about it until we saw him—assuming it is a he—getting into a car and ripping the skin-tight mask off his face. The camera panned down just before we could see who this new “A” really is. No surprise there!
The plot, as mentioned before, solidified because now we see a whole new side of Byron, Aria’s unforgiving father. The missing club is his and there is even a flashback of him and Aria’s mother Ella, discussing the future of Charlotte, a.k.a. Cece, a.k.a. former “A!” Honestly, the odds of Byron being the new “A” are very slim, but he could have something to do with Cece’s death. He could even just be a killer by association. One thing is for sure, the menacing texts keep flooding the Liars’ life, complicating their existence in a web of lies that seem to never end. The plot will surely thicken even more in next week’s episode when Alison and Mona come back. Stay tuned! CrypticRock.com gives New Guys, New Lies 5 out of 5 stars.
