Versions of the infamous Boogeyman have terrified the world for centuries, making it a long sought after, oft-used cinematic character/plot driver. Released on March 5, 2024 through Breaking Glass Pictures, Beware the Boogeyman looks to offer a different perspective to the usual creature feature. Co-written by Tim Coyle (Cool Book Club 2022, Outer Darkness 2023), Josh Dietrich (Spunk’s not Dead 2018, Bottoms 2023), and Kai Pacifico Eng (The Last Slay Ride 2022, Outer Darkness 2023), Calvin Morie MacCarthy (Conjuring: The Beyond 2022, Insidious Inferno 2023), and Chynna Rae Shurts (Cross Hollow 2022, Exorcism in Utero 2023), it is also directed by Calvin Morie MacCarthy (Insidious Inferno 2023, Pillow Party Massacre 2023), Coyle, along with Dietrich who show the long term after effects of Boogeyman encounters.
In this story, Dr. Tristan Mckenzie (Elissa Dowling: Girl on the Third Floor 2019, The Most Dangerous Game 2022) arrives at Silverdale Psychiatric Hospital for the criminally insane where she meets with Dr. Gaby Moon (Airisa Durand: An Amityville Poltergeist 2020, A Haunting in Ravenwood 2021) for a briefing prior to starting work at the facility. Dr. Moon shares the history of some of the more difficult cases Dr. Mackenzie will be dealing with so she is well aware of how dangerous some patients are.
Interestingly enough, despite having nothing else in common, the selected patients share a Boogeyman delusion. As Dr. Moon begins, the story flashes back to how individually the five – Cathy McGowin (Chynna Rae Shurts), Olivia (Nicolette Pullen: Nightmare 2015, Directed by Evil 2020), Tommy (Khail Duggan), John Conroy (Steve Larkin: Exorcism in Utero 2023, Conjuring: The Beyond 2022), and Shawn Kendall (Calvin Morie McCarthy) who lost their sanity leading to becoming admitted to Silverdale after encountering the evil creature. By the end of the briefing Dr. Mckenzie is not the same person she arrived there as… and a twist at the end ensures she never will be again.
Having full confidence in his craft and story, Tim Coyle works in almost every aspect of filming; which includes starring as one of the patients, Ant. While not entirely too groundbreaking, Beware of the Boogeyman shares an interesting take on the Boogeyman phenomena. Some of the acting is a little unpolished, and even with a low budget production, the special effects are quite good, by far standing out above everything else. Like Coyle, other cast members chipped in to make this film. This list includes Kai Pacifico Eng and Calvin Morie McCarthy, along with Erik Skybak who worked on the cinematography together; using a single camera perspective keeping pace with the changing scenes and shows promise. All things considered, Cryptic Rock gives Beware the Boogeyman 3 out of 5 stars.
